Obituary of Eileen Skaluba

SKALUBA - Eileen Skaluba, resident of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 16, 2012. She was 103 years of age. Eileen Skaluba was born on November 30, 1908 at Brandon, Manitoba: a daughter of Kathleen (nee Eagen) and Kieran Kenny, Irish immigrants to Canada. Eileen was raised on the farm and attended school in the district. As a young woman, Eileen worked for a time in Regina. On May 28, 1946 she was united in marriage to Joseph Skaluba at Yorkton. The couple made their home in Yorkton as Joe was employed with the Smith Fruit Company, and Eileen tended to the home. Eileen loved to garden, both she and Joe were active members of the Yorkton Horticultural Society, Eileen tended a large garden and numerous flower beds during the summer months around their home. She was delighted when the society honoured her with life-time member status. During the winter months Eileen took to sewing as a favorite pastime. She was also a long-time faithful member of St. Gerard's Parish in Yorkton and was a member of the Amicus Club, St. Gerard's CWL. She took great pride in her membership of the Society and the CWL. Following Joe's death in March of 1997, Eileen continued to maintain her own home, and with the help of her son Pat, was able to live independently for many more years. In December of 2009, she became a nursing home resident of the Sunrise Health Region. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Tom Kenny; her sisters: Marie Kammermayer, Gertrude Meek, and Anne Kenny. She leaves to cherish her memory, her son Pat of Yorkton; a granddaughter, Lindsey of Yorkton; a great granddaughter Brett; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and her many other relatives and friends. The prayer vigil service was held on Thursday evening, July 19, 2012 from St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton. Ingrid Prost was the Lay-Presider. Organist, Katherine Flaman led in the hymns 'Hail, Queen of Heaven', Psalm 90, and 'Day is Done'. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday morning, July 20, 2012 from St. Gerard's Church with Rev. Father Francis Hengen as Celebrant. Lay-readers were Brian Kruger, Dennis Naphin & Treeska Holtkamp. The crossbearer was Bill Kenny. Organist, Rita Hilbig, led members of the Parish Choir and the congregation in the singing of the hymns 'Here I Am Lord', Psalm 130, 'Prayer of St. Francis', 'Be Not Afraid', 'Song of the Angels', and 'Holy God We Praise Thy Name'. Members of the CWL attended the service and formed an Honour Guard in church. The interment took place in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Leo Skaluba, Brian Kruger, Dennis Naphin and Kevin Kenny serving as the casketbearers. Memorials may be made to the Redemptorists Education Fund as tokens of remembrance. Arrangements were entrusted to Bailey's Funeral Home.
