Obituary of Norma Sawchyn

SAWCHYN - Norma "Mom" was born in Apsley Ontario on May 27, 1931 to Russell and Adelaide (nee Tanner) Hales. Norma received her education at Apsley, Ontario and Peterborough, Ontario. Then as a young woman she moved to Yorkton where she found work as a receptionist in a doctors office. While working there she met Fred Sawchyn from Fenwood and were united in marriage on March 3, 1973 at the Anglican Church in Yorkton. Following their marriage mom moved to the farm and started her transformation to a farm wife. Although she had never been a gardener she learned to enjoy growing flowers and vegetables. After 15 years on the farm mom and Fred retired to Melville and enjoyed their retirement. Mom was involved with T.O.P.S. and the church groups. Norma also enjoyed working on the computer, playing cards, watching TV and playing shuffleboard. In 2002 Fred passed away and Norma continued to reside in her own home. In the last 10 years mom's health started to deteriorate. She had many health concerns over the years but always managed to survive them and had a reputation of rebounding from them. In the last year however, they seemed to catch up to her and spent time in the hospital and eventually moved into St. Paul Lutheran Home, which made her very happy. She told us as recent as last weekend how much she liked her "pretty blue" room. She was fortunate to stay in her own home until early this year, thanks to the efforts of her good friend Gail Wyatt and her cousin Isobel Airriess, who were always there for her when needed. Norma entered her eternal rest on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at St. Paul Lutheran Home at the age of 80 years. Predeceased by her parents, husband Fred; brother Murray in infancy and sister Doreen McIlmoyl. Norma leaves to cherish her memory her son Wayne and his wife Terry; and brother Bob (Faye) Hales Arrangements were by Bailey's Funeral Home, Melville.
