SHUMAY - Mr. Nick Shumay, formerly of the Orcadia district, beloved husband of Effie entered eternal rest on March 26, 2012 at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. He was 80 years of age. Nick was born on December 29, 1931 to Wasyl and Anastasia (Nellie) Shumay (nee Stefanyshyn). He was raised on the family farm in the Whitesand area and then moved to a farm 3 ½ miles south of Orcadia. During this time he attended Orkney B School. He enjoyed driving his horses - Birch and Baby to school with the buggy. Although every now and then the horses would run away and he ended up walking home after the horses. In 1948 the family moved into Orcadia where they farmed until October of l964. Nick took his first job in 1956 working at a Lumber Mill Camp near Carrot River, Saskatchewan. In 1957 he came closer to home and worked at Pachal's Beverages - Coca-Cola Ltd. in Yorkton for a few years as well as doing some trapping as a side line. In 1958 Nick was married to Effie Chepil and they made their home on Betts Avenue, in Yorkton. In 1960 Nick helped work on the family farm in Orcadia. He also took a job with Johnnie's Star Delivery in Yorkton from 1960 - 1962. In 1964 Nick and Effie and their family moved to Orcadia to the family farm and took over his dad's farming operation. In 1973 they built a new home on an acreage 2 miles east of Orcadia where they spent most of their lives farming and raising their five children. In his younger days, Nick enjoyed going to dances where nobody messed with him and he also enjoyed the odd shot of "home brew." Nick's hobbies included hunting, curling, fishing, golfing and going to Terrier Hockey games. He also enjoyed playing cards and socializing with neighbors and friends. One of Nick's most memorable moments in his life was when he competed with George Reed at the annual "Flour Packing Contest." This was an event held at the Sno Show Days during the winter months in Yorkton. The final event came down to a competition between George Reed of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Nick Shumay, farmer from Orcadia, Sask. George carried 500 pounds of flour across the stage. However, Nick made his mind up to take the title and that he did. He ended up walking across the stage carrying 675 pounds of flour! At that point George Reed came up to Nick and said you are by far the stronger man, and congratulated him on his unbelievable win. Nick still holds that title, no one has ever challenged him. He was a member on the board for the Yorkton Exhibition Association, the St. Mary's Brotherhood and attended St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church. His passion was farming and he knew it well. He could fix and run any piece of machinery and was not scared to try something new and push it to the limits. He farmed most of his life up until his stroke in November of 2008. Due to the extent of his stroke he was placed at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home in the Orkney House up until his passing. Nick is lovingly remembered by his wife Effie, his sons Allen (Cindy), Barry (Sherry), Brian (Lori), David (Dana) and daughter Brenda (Greg) Pacholka all residing in Yorkton; 10 grandchildren, Amanda, Megan, Brandon, Deanna, Brent, Kyle, Kristen, Lindsay, Rebecca and Justin. 2 great grandchildren, Tiffany and Ethan. Brother's Matt (Ann) of Yorkton, John (Doreen) of Port Moody, BC.
