Obituary of Lorraine Onofreychuk

ONOFREYCHUK - Lorraine Onofreychuk, resident of Yorkton, passed away on Thursday, Feb 23, 2012 at the Yorkton Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness. She was 75 years of age. Lorraine was born on July 28, 1936 on the family homestead in the Stornoway district, a daughter of John Partiak and Maria (nee Shwaga). She attended Geddes School and later worked a short time in Canora and Yorkton, Sask, until returning to help at the family farm in Stornoway. On July 14, 1956 Lorraine was united in marriage to Peter Onofreychuk at the St. Elia Church, Wroxton. Their union was blessed with a daughter (Dale) and son (Mark). They resided on their family farm, where they built their own home and raised their family, until the passing of Peter (after a short illness) in December, 1981. At that time Lorraine rented her farm and moved to Yorkton, Sask. to be closer to her children. Lorraine in her youth loved to ride horses and be around animals. She also loved to draw, embroider and cook, which she continued to do most of her life. She was devoted to her family, participated actively in the daily operations of the farm (milking cows, shipping cream, making hay, hauling grain, and selling chickens and eggs), as well as church activities in the St. Eli Church, Wroxton, where her husband served as a Cantor. Not one to slow down in her retirement years, she got a chance to travel with her daughter (Dale) a bit. Lorraine discovered her love of travel and took every opportunity until her health prevented her from doing it any longer. The trips to the North and South Dakota's for shopping and sight-seeing, as well as visits with family and friends took her to Vancouver, Calgary, Alberta, Winnipeg, Manitoba, and as far as Disneyland, California. She regretted deeply she had not travelled earlier in her life, but the cattle and grain farm required year round attention. Lorraine was a very giving person, who never turned down anyone's request. She was very devoted to her children, until the passing of her death. Despite failing health, she tried to participate and take an active part in everyday of her life. She fought hard to overcome her illness until the very end. Predeceased by her infant daughter (Baby Onofreychuk) in 1960; husband Peter in 1981; mother Maria and father John; brothers Steve, Nick, Alex, Mike, Peter and Tommy; sisters Victoria, Kay, Mary, Anne and Ellen. Left to mourn are her daughter Dale (Harvey) Rudnitski of Yorkton; son Mark (Cindy) Onofreychuk of Yorkton; sisters Julie Russel of Calgary, AB and Pauline Combs of Maple Ridge, BC: numerous nieces and nephews as well as friends. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre conducted by Very Rev. Fr. Mel Slashinsky of Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Cantor, William Kozey, assisted by members of the Parish Choir, led in the singing of the responses. Son-in-law, Harvey Rudnitski gave a tribute to Lorraine on behalf of the family. The interment took place in the Garden of Crucifixion with Harvey Rudnitski, Russell Rudnitski, Tim Norrish and Mark Onofreychuk serving as the casket bearers.
