Obituary of Mary Matt

MATT - Mary (Unrau) Matt was born on March 18, 1928 at Fortier, Manitoba, a daughter of Wilhelm and Mary Unrau. She grew up in the Portage la Prairie district and worked as a bricklayer and in a garment factory till she married Theodore John Matt on October 1, 1955. Mary and Ted moved to Innisville, Alberta in 1960 where they farmed until 1962, when they moved back to Kelliher and settled on a farm 3 miles west of town. Mary farmed with her husband until 1987 when she semi-retired and remained on the farm. Mary kept herself busy with gardening, sewing, crocheting, and caring for her family. She loved animals, especially dogs. She enjoyed reading and baking. Mary passed away on Friday Feb 3, 2012 at St. Peter's Hospital following a courageous battle with heart failure. She was 83 years of age. Predeceased by her father in 1965, her mother in 1987, a daughter Patsy Marie, her husband Theodore in 1987, a sister Anne Crewson and brother Peter Unrau. She leaves to mourn her passing her beloved sons: Jim and (Dawn) Unrau of Portage la Prairie, MB; and Tom of Kelliher; five daughters: Joan and (Howard) Mastin of Calgary, Kathy and (Louis) Kish of Leross and Caroline, Shirley and Virginia and (Richard) of Saskatoon. Also 8 grandchildren, Allison and (Jon), Alexis, Dianna and (Kent), Vanessa; Tyler and Chelesa and (Ryan); Melissa and Michael. Also a sister, Kay Eichen and 4 brothers, Bill, Jake, Richard and Edward Unrau. The funeral service was held on Friday, February 10, 2012 from St. Paul's United Church in Kelliher with Rev. Brian Mee officiating. The organist, Lenore Fincati led in the hymns 'Amazing Grace', 'I Come to the Garden Alone', and 'Nearer My God to Thee'. Granddaughter, Vanessa Mastin played the violin solo 'Air on a G String'. The interment followed in the Kelliher Memorial Gardens with Jim Unrau, Dave Kish, Louis Kish, Dianna Henker, Merril Larson and Kent Henker serving as the casketbearers.
