Obituary of Floyd Davies

DAVIES - Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Floyd Arthur Davies, Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery passed away on 9 January 2012 at Yorkton, Saskatchewan at the age of 78 years. Floyd was born in Springside, Saskatchewan on 10 January 1933, to Arthur and Ivy Davies. The family moved to Yorkton in 1940 where Floyd continued his education. Following employment with the International Harvester Company, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant, Regular Canadian Army on 1 July 1951. On 6 December 1952 he was united in marriage to his sweetheart, Eleanor "Chickie" Jones in Yorkton. He then served in 119 MAA Battery, 1 Lt Bty (Parachute), Apprentice Training Battery, 2 RCHA, 1 RCHA and 4 RCHA culminating as commanding officer of 3 RCHA (Royal Canadian Horse Artillery). He was also an Artillery Air Observation Post pilot. Following several important staff appointments, his final posting was that of Senior Canadian Officer, Palestine and Deputy Chief of Staff, United Nations, Golan Heights. His many various postings included Germany, Gagetown, New Brunswick, Ottawa, Kingston and Petawawa, Ontario, Shilo and Winnipeg, Manitoba. Following his retirement they settled in Springside, enjoying the summer home built at nearby Good Spirit Lake. In November 2009 he received the Last Post Fund, Long Service Medal from the Lieutenant Governor for more than twelve years voluntary service in providing support to our veterans survivors. He also served as President of the Saskatchewan Branch for four years. Floyd also had a keen interest in nature and the preservation of our country's lakes and natural habitat. Floyd was predeceased by his beloved wife Chickie on October 3, 2000; his parents, Arthur and Ivy Davies and his youngest sister, Betty-Anne Lewis. He is survived by his daughter Karen (Randy) Edgeworth (RN) (BScN) of Kingston, Ontario; son Dr. Gerald Davies (PhD), Saskatoon; daughter Debbie (Chris) Thorkelson, Concord, California; son James (Anna) Davies, Yorkton; eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and his wonderful dog, Rosie. Also surviving is his brother Jerry Davies, Bedford, NS; sister Shirley (Brian) Andrews and brother Donnie (Lenore) Davies, both of Winnipeg. By his own request, there will be no funeral. At a future date burial of ashes next to his beloved Chickie, will take place at the Springside Cemetery followed by a "Celebration of Life" and refreshments at the lake.
