Obituary of Lena Sawkey

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lena Sawkey on December 11, 2011. Lena was born January 16, 1916 west of MacNutt, SK to Veronia & Nick Wicheruk. When she went to work for the McNicol's in the Saltcoats district, she met her future husband, Paul Sawkey, whom was also working for the McNicol's at that time. In 1936, Paul & Lena were married and began a life of farming east of Saltcoats on a quarter section of land that was identified as "15" at that time. In 1942, they moved further east into the Castleton district. Paul & Lena were blessed with four children: John Andrew, Anne, Paul Daniel, and David. Lena continued to reside on the family farm until she moved into the Yorkton & District Nursing Home just a few short years ago. Lena was predeceased by her husband Paul, grandson Denton and son John Andrew. She is survived by three children, Anne, Paul Daniel, and David (Angie). She is also survived by three grandchildren, Maria, Joyce, and Trevor; adopted grandson Marcel Pelletier and by three great grandchildren, Kennedie, Draden, and Jocelyn as well as extended family & friends. th A Graveside Funeral Service was held on Friday, December 16 from the Saltcoats Town Cemetery with Rev. Walter Farquharson of the United Church of Canada officiating. Elmer Aichele, Ken Aichele, Joyce Sawkey, Maria Patterson, Draden Sawkey and Trevor Sawkey served as the casketbearers. A reception followed in the Town Hall with tributes and words of remembrance delivered by Rev. Walter Farquharson. Memorials in memory of Lena may be made to the Saltcoats Town Cemetery Fund or to the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com .
