Obituary of Pearl Lutzko

LUTZKO - Pearl Lutzko, daughter of Prokip and Mary (nee Wynik) Ewanik, was born on February 15, 1899 in Chortikiw, Ukraine. After the death of her father and her mother's remarriage, the family came to Canada. Mike Prohebny (step-father), her mother, a sister Sanka, a year old half-brother John, came to Canada in 1907. An older brother and sister remained in Europe. Their ship brought them to Halifax, from there they traveled to Winnipeg. They lived there for a short time before moving to the Cook's Creek district NE of Winnipeg. On Feb 28, 1909 another half-brother Steve was born. Pearl married John Lutzko on June 12, 1915. They farmed land south of Goodeve until 1959 when they moved to Ituna. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage before John's death in 1975. They had 7 children: Nick, Henry, Joe, Pauline, Rose, Allan and Edward. Henry fought and died for his country in WWII, he had never married. The remaining six children all married and had families. Pearl has 29 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren and 25 great-great grandchildren. rd She was an avid gardener growing a garden every year until her 103 year. She also had apple trees, raspberry bushes and a stellar strawberry patch. She always had beautiful flowers both inside and outside her house - she truly had a green thumb. Her life was a mix of both good times and bad, sometimes feast and sometimes famine, times of great loss but also times of great joy. She worked hard but that is where she found her worth - in doing for others, making things nice, keeping her house clean and tidy, welcoming people into her home and being there for the people whom she loved. Pearl passed away peacefully at the Ituna Pioneer Lodge on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at the age of 112. She was predeceased by her husband John and sons Nick, Henry and Joe. Pearl is survived by her children, Pauline Schinborn of Canora, Rosie Konjolka of Invermay, Allan (Mary) Lutzko of Saskatoon, Edward (Julie) Lutzko of Calgary and her daughter-in-law Elsie Lutzko as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Pearl lived a very long life that spanned three different centuries. She was the oldest person in Saskatchewan and the second oldest person in Canada.
