MATECHUK - Elsie Matechuk, beloved wife of John of Yorkton passed away peacefully on Monday, October 31, 2011 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. She was 72 years of age. Elsie Christina Matechuk was born on April 26, 1939 at Yorkton, Saskatchewan; a daughter of Peter and Rose (nee Tymorusky) Lundgren. She received her education at Burke School and the Yorkton Collegiate Institute, graduating in 1956. On May 24th, 1958 Elsie was united in marriage to John Matechuk at Yorkton. Elsie began her working career with Sask Tel. She was with Sask Tel for six years, first as an operator, and then advancing to the position of supervisor, before she and John moved to Vancouver, BC in 1964. There, Elsie assisted John in managing an apartment building for a few years. Elsie's experience with the telephone company in Saskatchewan was invaluable as she became employed with BC Tel. After a short time as an operator, Elsie quickly advances to the position of supervisor. After John's retirement from the CNIB in 1988, Elsie continued to work until her retirement in 1997. In that year the couple moved back to Yorkton to establish her retirement home. Elsie enjoyed gardening, working in the yard, and tending to her flower beds. She and John enjoyed taking holidays together as well. Her pets were a big part of her life too. During her working years, Elsie and John spent many contented days at their trailer in Blaine, Washington. Predeceased by her father Peter and mother Rose, and by her brother Magnus Lundgren. She leaves to mourn her passing her beloved husband John, sisters-in-law, Vivian Lundgren of Saskatoon & Evelyn Young of Yorkton; a brother-in-law Gene Matechuk of Surrey BC; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held on Friday, November 4, 2011 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre. Rev. Father Methodius Kushko, C.Ss.R. officiated. The cantor, Ed Pindus was assisted by members of the Parish Choir. The interment took place in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Art Freiheit, Peter Yachina, Lorne Anderson, Danny Heshka, Dorin McGibney and Cory Young serving as the casketbearers.
