Obituary of Hilda Syrota
SYROTA - Mrs. Hilda Syrota of Yorkton, formerly of the Hyas district, widow of William entered eternal life on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the Yorkton Regional Health Center following a brief illness. She was 86 years of age. Hilda Pearl Syrota was born on October 22, 1925 in Hyas, Saskatchewan, the daughter of Nick and Annie Kachuk. Hilda attended Ulric School completing her education to grade nine. Shortly thereafter Hilda took a special interest in William Syrota and they were married on June 24, 1945 at Canora Saskatchewan. This union was blessed by their only daughter Audrey. Hilda mastered the art of being a farm wife…driving combines, tractor and grain trucks, feeding cows as well as many home -making tasks such as baking bread, and pastry was her specialty. She farmed with William 30 years before retiring to Yorkton. One of her favourite past times was fishing with William. Her other favourite pastime was gardening and she kept it immaculate. Her greatest enjoyment came from being with her granddaughter and great grandchildren. During their retirement, they visited the Ukraine several times to visit relatives. In 1995 Bill and Hilda celebrated their 50 wedding anniversary. Hilda was a lifetime member of the Ukrainian Orthodox faith and served as a member of the Ukrainian Women's Association for 38 years. Hilda was predeceased by her parents, husband William and siblings Art, Martha, Margaret, and step-siblings John, Katie and Mary. She leaves to cherish her memory Audrey Syrota of Yorkton, granddaughter Natasha (Jimmy) great grandsons Jimmy and Malik of Calgary; one sister Lenore of Yorkton; one brother-in-law Paul Syrota of Invermay and sister-in-law Shirley Syrota of Regina as well as relatives and friends. Prayers were held on Thursday, November 3, 2011 and the Funeral Service on Friday, November 4th at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky officiating. The responses were led by William Kozey & parish choir members. The crossbearer was Jimmy Dixon and the banner bearers were John Pankiw and Dr. Lornen Nischuk. Members of the Ukrainian Women's Association, Olena Pchilka Branch served in an honour guard. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Abe Fuhr, Peter Fuhr, Brent Kindratsky, Randy Hrywkiw, Randy Lozinski and Reg Hrywkiw serving as the casket bearers.
