Obituary of Nettie Sakundiak

SAKUNDIAK - With heavy hearts we sadly announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great, great-grandmother, Nettie Sakundiak, at the Yorkton Union Hospital, in the early hours of September 12, 2011, she passed into the arms of Jesus at the age of 99 years, 8 months. Nettie Kuzmar was born on January 22, 1912 in Hlobichok, Ukraine. In June, 1921, she and her family immigrated to Canada. They settled in the Buchanan district. She married Metro Sakundiak on November 23, 1931. They made their home on the farm north of Buchanan. As a couple, they were active members of the Ukrainian Catholic churches of Olesha and Buchanan. In 1967, after 36 years of mixed farming, and raising seven children, they retired to Yorkton. Nettie became a faithful parishioner of St. Mary's Church, an active member of the UCWLC, the prayer group, and visiting the sick. She was also one of the first members of the Blue Army. Nettie and Metro were instrumental in forming the St. Mary's Golden Agers' Club. She remained a hostess of this club until her failing health three years ago. After successfully completing a cooking course, Nettie's love of this skill led her to cater many large fundraising events at St. Mary's Hall. Her delicious recipes inspired her family to publish a cookbook for her 90th birthday, in her honour. Nettie's self-taught talents of knitting, crocheting, embroidering, quilting, cross-stitching, sewing, canning and baking were enjoyed and appreciated by all. Her love of sharing made her home welcoming to everyone who passed through her doors. Nettie's love of plants inspired her to grow large vegetable and flower gardens. She gladly shared these with all her family. Life struggles inspired a strong faith in the Blessed Mother. She was very proud of her heritage, culture and traditions. Family and friends played an important role in her life. She challenged them to a good card game. Nettie was predeceased by her husband Metro, mother Pauline Dorohoy, father Hnat Kuzmar, grandson Jeffery Sakundiak, and sister Olga Churnny. She will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by her seven children, daughters; Lorna Brodziak (Ed) of Preeceville; Marge of Fort Smith, NWT; Phyllis Rainey (Barry) of Edmonton; and Gloria Lischynski (Dan) of Yorkton; sons Lorne (Olga) of Yorkton; Ivan (Joan) of Buchanan; and Joseph (Mildred) of Calgary; twenty grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren, and five great, great-grandchildren. Prayer Service was held on Thursday, September 15th at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Ray Lukie, C.Ss.R. officiating. The Holy Rosary led by members of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League and The Blue Army preceded the prayers. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, September 16th at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. and Rev. Father Ray Lukie, C.Ss.R. as Concelebrants. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita and parish choir members. Serving as the crossbearer was Skyler Zelinski and as epistle reader was Joseph Sakundiak. Gloria Lischynski shared reflections of her mother's life. The Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren & Great Great Grandchildren were considered honourary pallbearers. An Honour Guard was formed by members of UCWLC. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Brian Brodziak, Laurie Sakundiak, Rick Sakundiak, Kevin Sakundiak, Dustin Rainey and Justin Brodziak serving as casket bearers.
