Obituary of Mary Woloschuk

WOLOSCHUK - Mary Woloschuk passed away on September 5, 2011 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre at the age of 90 years. Mary was the fourth child born to Nykolay and Wasylena (Wintonyk) Woloschuk on May 16, 1921 in the Stornoway district. Mary received her education at Angove, a little country school near Stornoway. In 1930 the family moved to a farm near Saltcoats where Mary completed her high school. In the 1940's Mary attended the Marvel Hairdressing School. After becoming a certified hair dresser Mary worked as a hair stylist for a number of years before setting up her own Hair Salon in Provost, Alberta. After retiring from hair-dressing Mary returned to the family farm where she assisted her aging parents with the farming operations. Following the death of her father, Mary and her mother moved to Yorkton where she cared for her elderly mother for many years. During these years Mary did odd jobs and had boarders at her home. After her mother's death, Mary moved to Victoria Court where she enjoyed the leisure life, playing cards and participating in various social events with old and new friends. Mary was an active member of Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton. She sang in the Church Choir and was a member of the Ukrainian Women's Association- Olena Pchilka Branch, where she served as secretary for two years. She was honoured for her 25 years of service to the U.W.A.C., Yorkton Branch. Before her eye's failed her, she enjoyed crafts, such as Ukrainian stitchery, crocheting, and quilting. She was also often praised for her culinary skills (cooking and baking). Mary was predeceased by her parents Nykolay and Wasylena; brothers, Metro and his wife Anne, Peter and his wife Mary, and Norman; sister Anne Sorokan and a young nephew Ken Woloschuk. She leaves to cherish her memory, sister Irene Woloschuk, sister-in-law Kay Woloschuk, brother-in-law Maurice Sorokan, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Mary always enjoyed hearing the activities and accomplishments of her nieces and nephews. These are - Betty Sebestian & family, Regina; Norman Wallace, Saskatoon; Cathy Majors & family, Regina; Boris (Connie) Woloschuk & family, Ottawa; Lesya Dunsmoor & family, Ottawa and Vancouver; Wayne Woloschuk (Lesia) & family, Calgary; Greg Sorokan (Susan) & family, Prince Albert; Joanne Sorokan (Andrew) Kasowski, Saskatoon and many great nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Prayers were held on Sunday, September 11th and the Funeral Service was held on Monday, September 12th at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky officiating. The responses were led by Gerald Yaholnitsky and Parish Choir members. The crossbearer was Orest Wintonyk. An honour guard was formed by members of the Ukrainian Women's Association, Olena Pchilka Branch. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Wayne Woloschuk, Andrew Kasowski, Dr. Steven Zacharuk, Greg Sorokan, Tony Mazur, George Woloschuk, Boris Woloschuk and David Zrudlo serving as the casket bearers.
