Obituary of Peter Onofriechuk

ONOFRIECHUK - Mr. Peter Onofriechuk, formerly of the MacNutt district, beloved husband of Rose Onofriechuk passed away peacefully in his sleep on Aug. 6, 2011 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 95 years of age. Peter was born in the MacNutt district on June 6, 1916, the fourth child of 11 children to Paul and Dora (Calanchie) Onofriechuk. He grew up on the family farm, and at an early age the family moved to Powell River, B.C., only soon to move back to the farm in the MacNutt District. He attended school at Minerva to grade 7. He recalled the many times of how him and his siblings walked bare footed as they had very little. He farmed with his parents until he met the love of his life, Rose Dwernichuk. They were married on November 2, 1941 and lived with his family until they purchased land. They moved into a little shack that was a chicken coop and from that shack Grampa built the beautiful house in which they lived for 67 years together. In November they would have been married 70 years. On May 5, 1950, they were blessed with one son, Edwin. At that time Peter then started working as a mechanic in Mac Nutt for J.B.Andres and then John Cornelius. He later moved on to drive to Langenburg and work for Herb Scholz. John Deere Tractors were grampa's specialty. He worked for 22 years until as a mechanic as well as farming. His hands and feet to this day were so sore because of the cold extreme conditions he worked in the early years. He often talked of his trip to the John Deere factory in Waterloo, Iowa. Peter and Rose did some traveling together to B.C., Washington, and Nova Scotia to visit family always coming home with many stories and new jokes…Grampa always had a joke to tell, didn't matter who you were. He loved doing woodwork in this home and at the church. He spent many hours at the church and when he couldn't work no more, he was still there in a chair watching the others and giving instructions. He was also on the church board for many years. His church was always important. Grampa always wanted his family to have more than he had. He was very proud of his only grandchild, Stacey. They spent many hours together whether it was out in the shop fixing a tractor, or cutting grass or just sitting telling each other jokes. When Stacey got her little beagle, Miley, she became grampa's companion and followed him all over the yard. Grampa would say Miley was a human in dog clothes and before he was done with her she would talk to him. He looked forward to Miley's visits at the care home. In December of 2009 Peter suffered a stroke which landed him in the hospital and he was unable to use his legs. He then moved to the YDNH where he resided for the past 16 months. Grampa was predeceased by his son Edwin, his parents, Paul and Dora. His siblings, Ella, Mary, George, Lena, Caroline Nick, Jim and an infant at birth. As well as his maternal parents and brothers and sisters-in-law. He leaves to mourn his wife Rose, granddaughter Stacey, daughter-in-law, Karen, grand puppy Miley. His brothers, John (Mae), Alex (Brenda), sister- in - law Beryl as well as many nephew and nieces. Rest in peace. May your memory be Eternal. We will always love you. A prayer service was held on Tuesday, August 9th at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 10th at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church, MacNutt district with Rev. Father Richard Ehrmantraut officiating. The responses were led by Dobr. Orysia Ehrmantraut. Serving as the cross bearer was Dennis Gyoerick and as banner bearers were Nick Antony and Don Kahut. The interment followed in St. Nicholas parish cemetery with Stacey Onofriechuk, Edwin Antony, Alvin Onofriechuk, Trevor Gyorick, Marie Dawe and Barry Hilton serving as the casket bearers. Memorials honouring Peter's life can be made to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
