Obituary of Roman Rushinko

A memorial folder from the funeral service may be printed under the "Memories" tab, then choose "Memorial Program". Rushinko - Roman was born on March 18, 1940 to Mike and Mary (Tataryn) Rushinko. Roman grew up on a farm east of Ituna, in a family of eight children. He attended St. Stanislaus School and at the age of 17 he went to Uranium City and worked for the power company Northern Utilities. In 1958, Roman moved back to Ituna to help his father Mike on the family farm. Roman and Alice (Hoy) were united in marriage on November 24, 1962 in Ituna. They moved to Regina and resided there for thirteen years. Roman worked for Dominion Bridge and IPSCO. While in Regina Roman and Alice were blessed with four wonderful sons Dale, Darrel, Scott, and Stacy. In 1974, Roman and Alice purchased the family farm and moved their family to Ituna. Roman and Alice operated a mixed farm and he was very proud to achieve the Saskatchewan Century Farm Award in 2005. This was an honour that he shared with all of his family and friends. The plaque is proudly displayed in front of their family home where his grandchildren are the fifth generation to enjoy the Rushinko family farm. Roman was the caretaker and ice maker at the Ituna Curling Rink for thirteen years. Many memories were made there with family and friends. Roman's love of farming and community involvement led him to run for Councillor of the Ituna RM of Bon Accord. For the past four years Roman has dedicated many hours and hard work in maintaining the land and roads within his jurisdiction. Roman's generosity and willingness to help family, friends, neighbours, and volunteer within the community was always noticed and appreciated. His smile, laugh, and sense of humour will always be remembered. Roman peacefully passed away at his home on Sunday, July 31, 2011 as he would have wished. He leaves to cherish his memory and to celebrate his life his wife Alice, of 49 years. Sons: Dale (Patti) of Provost; Darrel (Connie) of Chaplin and children Travis (great granddaughter Tayler), Tyson, and Dustin; Scott (Allison) of Melfort and children Sammie and Cole; Stacy (Christy) of Esterhazy and children Taryn, Rory, and Bronwyn; Brother- Eddie (Rose) Rushinko, Sisters- Wanda Calvert, Diana (Edward) Holowenko, Elaine Shiry, Evelyn Kennedy, sister in law Ethel (Norman) Keyowski, and brother in laws Peter Broshko and Charles Kreps, thirteen nephews, two nieces, and many dear friends. Roman was predeceased by his parents Mike and Mary Rushinko, in laws George and Edna Hoy, sisters Gloria Broshko and Irene Kreps, and brother in law; Art Shiry and John Kennedy. Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 4, 2011 from St. Stanislaus Church with Rev. Brian Mee of the United Church of Canada officiating. Scripture readings were given by Cheryl Tedla. Tributes & Words of Remembrance were given by Stacy & Clark Rushinko. The organist, Paulette van der Helm led the congregation in the singing of the hymns 'Just as I Am' and 'Amazing Grace'. A special musical selection 'Beyond The Sunset' was sung by Gloria & Friends. Honourary bearers were all of Roman's friends and acquaintances. Travis Rushinko, Darcy Holowenko, Grant Kennedy, Shaun Broshko, Terry Keyowski and Doyle Zrymiak served as casket bearers. Interment will follow at a later date in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
