Obituary of Mike Zawada

A memorial folder from the funeral service may be printed under the "Memories" tab, then choose "Memorial Folder". ZAWADA - Michael (Mike) Zawada passed away on July 28, 2011. He was 95 years of age. Mike was born on October 2, 1915, the second son of Nick and Nettie (Diduck) Zawada. Mike attended Stornoway School until Grade 8. He enjoyed working with horses and did a lot of field work rather than attend school. Mike married Lena Matichuk in 1937 and they raised three children, Gloria, Metro and Lorne. Mike looked after his church which was located on his farm, with fires in the winter and cutting grass in the summer. He eventually took over the farm in 1949 and worked it till he retired in 1968. He and Lena moved to Yorkton where he purchased a home, but still drove to the farm to help out. Mike was involved with the Clyde Rural Telephone Company and was a member of Saskatchewan Pool Elevator Company. Mike was an active member of St. Mary's Church and attended regularly. Mike joined the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood and there to was a very active and faithful member for many years. In 1975 his wife Lena passed away, which left Mike very much alone. In 1977 Mike married Mabel Koochin (Zeeben) and they lived happily in their own home until 2007, when they moved to a senior's complex, Fisher Court. Mike was predeceased by his wife Lena in 1973, his father Nick in 1975, his mother Nettie in 1985, his brother Alex in 1987 and nephews, Gary in 1987 and Dennis in 2003, Brothers-in-law, Peter Dombroski in 1962 and Ned Pisiak in 2010, sister Annie in 2006, his daughter-in-law Betty Zawada in 2006, son-in-law Jerry Markosky in 1997, niece Darlene Jones in 2001 and nephew Norman Lusney in 2007. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Mabel, his children, Gloria Behm, Metro Zawada and Lorne (Linda) Zawada, his sister Mary Dunlop and Susan Pisiak. His grandchildren Raelene (Al) Stewart, Aaron Stewart, Lane Stewart & Amanda Stewart, Denise (Kevin) Bilan, Kevin Zawada, Karen (Trevor) Koshman and Darren (Keri) Zawada. His great grandchildren Kennedy & Syndey Koshman, Maysen & Elizabeth Zawada, Caitlyn & Madison Bilan, Brayden & Morgan Zawada. His step children Janet Hale (Gary Gibson), Curtis (Becky) Hale and Nicole (Bill Shaver) Hale and their children, Brittany, Katie Ann, Alisha and Amber, Candace Koochin (Tom Ritchie), Judy Koochin (Larry Ellis) and Kenneth (Cheryl) Koochin and Paul, Tanya (Jared Mills) and Traci (David Slater) and nephew Wes (Lorraine) Dombroski. Mike will be sadly missed by his many friends and family, as well as friends on coffee row. Prayers were held on Monday, August 1st at. St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R. officiating. The Holy Rosary led by members of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood preceded the prayers. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday, August 2nd at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church with Very Rev. Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita and parish choir members. Serving as cross and candle bearer were Caitlyn & Madison Bilan. The epistle was read by Denise Bilan. The Honor Guard was formed by members of U.C.B.C., St. Volodymyr Branch. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Kevin Zawada, Darren Zawada, Trevor Koshman, Kevin Bilan, Al Stewart and Dwayne Markosky serving as the casket bearers.
