Obituary of Janet Chickowski

CHICKOWSKI - Mrs. Janet Chickowski of the Foam Lake district, beloved wife of George Chickowski passed away on May 6, 2011 after a very short battle with cancer. She was 63 years of age. Janet Natalia (Shambel) Chickowski was born on July 24, 1947 in Melville, Saskatchewan, the seventh child of Sam and Katie (nee Dorosh) Shambel of Ituna. Janet was predeceased by her parents, Sam (1979) and Katie (1990); her son, Darron (1988); sister, Mary (1945); brother, Nick (2005) and sister, Stella (2008). Janet is lovingly remembered by her husband George of 47 years; her daughter, Carla (Dennis) Less of Creston, B.C.; sisters, Nellie Scherbey of Chilliwack, B.C., Elizabeth (Abe) Weier of St. Catherines, ON and brother, Zennon (Leona) Shambel of Ituna; sister-in-law, Zena Shambel of Saskatoon as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She attended Lunnville School and later high school in Ituna. In 1963 Janet attended Marvel Beauty School in Regina and received her hairdressing diploma. October 3, 1964 George and Janet got married and lived in Regina until the spring of 1966 when they moved to George's family farm in the Beckingham-Model Farm area which the still call home. In July 1966 their first child, Darron was born, and in 1971 their daughter, Carla. In 1987 Janet took employment at the Foam lake Jubilee Home where she worked every department in the home until December 2008 when she retired. Janet truly loved her job caring for elderly people. Janet, being the "rock" of the family, kept everyone in touch. She was passionate about cooking for her family and others that were in need. Janet loved to entertain guests at home and made sure everyone was fed, watered and had a good time. Janet loved keeping a meticulously clean house with the cleanest windows. Janet enjoyed going fishing during the summer and winter experiencing success to her limit every time. When she wasn't fishing she loved to hunt for gophers and had a very good shot. Janet would spend the cold winter months crocheting doilies and little stars for family and friends. Christmas trees, Janet's love of the sun, birds singing and the lily gardens around her home were some of Janet's favourite things. Janet's spirit was loving and nurturing as well as very generous. With a strong work ethic at home, gardening or at Jubilee Home - everyone who had the pleasure to enjoy her company was is sure she was taken from us way too soon. We will all love and miss you! Prayer services were held on Wednesday, May 11th and Requiem Divine Liturgy on Thursday, May 12th at Patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, Model Farm with Rev. Father Methodius Kushko, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. Mike Woitas served as sacristan. The cantor, Bernice Bzdel assisted by parish choir members led in the singing of the reponses. The epistle reader was Carla Lee and the crossbearer was Derryl Schendel. The interment followed in the parish cemetery with Jason Shambel, Warren Bashutski, Dennis Shambel, Brent Bashutski, Tim Leontowicz and Brian Blight serving as the casket bearers. Following the memorial luncheon, Carla Lee shared reflections of her mother's life. Memorials in Janet's memory may be made to the Palliative Care programs at Jubilee Nursing Home or at Wynyard Hospital.
