Obituary of Gudrun Broten

BROTEN - Gudrun Broten, known affectionately as Gertie, was born on November 16, 1912 at Estevan, Saskatchewan; a daughter of Halvor and Laura (nee Hovels) Broten. She was raised on the farm and received her education at Poplar Creek and Long Range Schools. Gudrun remained at home after completing Grade 9, to help her parents as her mother was ill. Eventually Gudrun joined up with brothers Osborne & Gunder. They farmed for many years at Willowbrook and Ituna, then resided in Hubbard before returning to Yorkton, retiring in 1990. Following Osborne's death in September of 2004, Gudrun took up residence in the Bentley Manor. In April of 2008 she became a resident of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home, where she had resided until her passing on January 27, 2011. Throughout her life, Gudrun had been a member of the Hubbard Golden Agers Club. Quilting was a favorite pastime. Predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Ole, Lars, Colburn, Gunder, Olaf, Hans, Leif, Henry & Osborne; a sister Olga, and sister-in-law Pearl. Gudrun leaves to mourn her passing her sister-in-law, Dorothy Broten of Vernon, BC; nieces and nephews: James Broten (Lystra), Philip Broten (Beverley), Maureen Lamb, Archie Broten (Margueritte), Rodney Broten, Beverly Campbell (Rod), Elaine Henschell (Bert), Clifford Stephens (surviving husband of Anne Broten), Gloria Johns (Foster), and their families. The graveside memorial service was held on Thursday, February 3, 2011 from the Garden of St. John at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens. Crystal Bailey officiated. Pallbearers were James, Philip & Karsten Broten, Verne Kalk, Dean Petersen & Fred Lesko. Arrangements were entrusted to Bailey's Funeral Home.
