Obituary of Catherine Bird

BIRD - Catherine S. Bird was born May 25, 1913 in Cardiff, South Wales, Great Britain. Catherine served in the WAAF during WW II where she met her husband, William Bird of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. They were married in May 1943. Bill Bird was killed in action in France in September 1944. Catherine fulfilled her commitment to Bill that their daughter would be raised in Canada and travelled to Canada in January 1945 and made her home in Winnipeg. Catherine worked for the Bank of Montreal in Winnipeg for over 30 years. Catherine was a faith-filled Catholic throughout her life, serving her parish of St. Alphonsus in Winnipeg in many ways. She was a member of the Catholic Women's League for over 50 years serving as president of her parish council, diocesan council, Manitoba provincial council and at the National council executive as secretary-treasurer. Catherine was a gracious woman of courage, commitment with a great sense of humour. Catherine died peacefully Monday, Jan. 10, 1011 at Yorkton & District Nursing Home. She is survived by her only child, Catherine Mary Bybliw, son-in-law, Walter and grandson, William, of Yorkton; also many nieces, nephews around the world. The prayer vigil service was held on Thursday evening, January 13, 2011 from St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church. The lay-presiders were Christine Shuya and Dolores Spreitzer. Pianist, Katherine Flaman led in the hymns 'Christ be Our Light', Psalm 27, 'Holy Darkness' and 'Day is Done'. Laverne Rawlick was the lay-reader. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, January 14, 2011 from St. Gerard's Church with Rev. Father Antoni Degutis OMI as Celebrant. The crossbearer was Elaine Wintonyk, Orest Machushek was the altarserver, and Lori Zuzak and Arthur Scheer were the lay-readers. Organist, Pam Yaremko led members of the choir and the congregation in the hymns 'Lord of all Hopefulness', Psalm 67, 'I Have Loved you', 'The Lord Is My Hope', 'Song of the Angels', and 'A Living Faith'. Members of the CWL formed an honor guard. The interment took place in the Garden of Devotion at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens.
