Obituary of Rosie Babiuk

BABIUK - Rosie Babiuk was born on July 1, 1920 on the family farm in the Rhein district of Saskatchewan; a daughter of John and Mary (nee Chepil) Wlasichuk. Rosie received her education at Vionne School. At the tender age of 12 she started sewing, which led to a career that spanned well over 50 years. She enjoyed gardening and had some of the most bountiful vegetable and flower gardens in the area. A regular Bible study was something she always enjoyed. Rosie's faith led her to read the Bible from cover to cover many times throughout her life. In 1941 Rosie married Steve Babiuk, a marriage that lasted for 68 years until Steve's passing in 2009. They farmed from 1941 until 1960, at which time they moved into Rhein. A faithful member of the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Rosie helped cook many meals at the Rhein Grand Hall. After 40 years of living in Rhein, Rosie and Steve moved to Yorkton in 1999. Rosie resided at the Bentley Manor Home for 5 years before becoming a resident of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home this past year. She passed away on Saturday, January 1, 2011 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. She was 90 years and 6 months of age. Rosie and Steve were blessed with four wonderful sons: Lawrence, Mervin, Harold and Kelvin. Rose was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and aunt. Her talent as a seamstress and a gardener touched the hearts of many. Her house, like her heart, was always open and warm. Her home was a stopping place for friends and family, where many wholesome home cooked meals were enjoyed. Rosie was famous for her beautiful garden, of which she shared its bountiful harvest with family and friends. Like everything else in Rosie's life, the garden was meticulously cared for until it grew to the full measure of its creation. Predeceased by Steve on May 27, 2009; her parents, John and Mary; a grandson Leonard; by brothers Peter, Metro, Ted, Tony and Harvey; and sisters Annie Kereluk, Pauline Demchuk, Effie Cymbalisty and Mary Holowatuk. She leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish her memory: sons Lawrence (Lillian) of Edmonton, Mervin (Marian) of Kelowna, Harold (Carolyn) of Medicine Hat, and Kelvin (Marlene) of Calgary; six grandchildren: Howard and David of Edmonton, Shaun of Cairo, Egypt, Brent of Calgary, Lauren and Kristin of Calgary; two great grandchildren: Sean and Sarah of Edmonton; sisters: Nellie (Mike) Koroluk of Yorkton, Alice (Millard) Landstad of Canora; and by brothers Mike Wlasichuk of St. Albert and Bill Wlasichuk of Calgary, numerous nieces, nephews, and her many other relatives and friends. We, her family, feel it was a privilege to be under her loving guidance and direction these many years, and while we will miss her, we know she goes onto a greater existence and is again with her beloved husband Steve. The prayer service was held on Wednesday evening, January 5, 2010 and the funeral service was held on Thursday morning, January 6, 2010, all from Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton. Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky officiated. Cantor, Gerald Yaholnitsky, assisted by members of the Parish Choir led in the singing of the responses. The interment followed in the Garden of Crucifixion at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with sons Lawrence, Mervin, Harold and Kelvin serving as the casketbearers. Arrangements were entrusted to Bailey's Funeral Home. Interment Details Yorkton Memorial Gardens
