Obituary of Ted Matkowski

MATKOWSKI - We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Ted (Theodore) Matkowski on Sunday November 14th. Ted was predeceased by his parents William and Anne (Lahosky); siblings: Lena, Annie, Rose, William and Donald, and his son Morley in infancy in 1951. He attended Theodore School and then when of age he served in WWII with the Winnipeg Grenadiers, and served in the Allutian Islands. On his discharge he returned to Theodore and took up farming on the Emil Hansen land. He married Marelyn Gruber in 1949. To supplement the farm income he started a trucking business. In 1963 he decided to expand the business so he bought a tractor semi trailer unit. He travelled in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba hauling grain, hay and livestock to the various markets. In addition to this he worked for Yorkton Concrete Products hauling cement products to both residential and businesses in Saskatchewan. He loved to watch sports and would drive many miles to watch the local teams play. In his younger days he would take his favourite horses Trigger and Mabel to participate in many local races. He loved fishing and thoroughly enjoyed his many fishing trips with family especially to The Pas, Manitoba. For a pastime "coffee row" was a daily routine where the latest news and stories were told. In the evening, the cards came out and many a good games were enjoyed. Ted leaves to mourn his loving wife Marelyn of 61 years, daughter Denise (Tony) Norman, grandchildren: Angela & Jeff, step grandchildren: Adam and Erin, many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncle and cousins and numerous friends. Funeral Services was held on Friday, November 19, 2010 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Crystal Bailey officiating. Organist, Amanda Buhler led the congregation in the singing of the hymns Abide with Me and Amazing Grace. Daughter Denise and son-in-law Tony gave a tribute to Ted. The Legion Tribute Service was conducted by members of the Royal Canadian Legion, General Alexander Ross Branch #77,Yorkton. The interment took place in the Theodore Cemetery with Bruce, Brian and Neil Matkowski, Lawrence Omelian, Louis Lahosky and Sandy Reed serving as the casket bearers.
