Obituary of Dorothy Moen

MOEN - Mrs. Dorothy Moen of Melville, Saskatchewan passed away Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010 at St. Peter's Hospital in Melville. She was 95 years old. Dorothy was born April 8, 1915 to Paul and Annie Masur of Melville. She received her education at Melville. Dorothy and her brothers and sisters spent many happy hours playing together at their 10th Avenue home. In her youth, Dorothy picked apples in B.C. She would fondly remember spending her earnings on the first coat and hat she ever bought for herself. She married Ernie Moen of the Melville district on June 1, 1937. After Ernie's parents retired from farming, Ernie and Dorothy took over the homestead. When they retired from farming and moved to Melville in 1973, their son Larry took over the homestead. Dorothy's happiness revolved around her family. She took pride in the successes and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren - no matter how small some of them may have appeared to others - and was equally proud sharing their news with others. She was a devoted and loving wife with an unwavering faith in God who continued to pray into her final year of life. Dorothy believed raising children who were good Christians, well-mannered, respectful and neat was her duty. As the second-oldest daughter of 15 children, Dorothy often said helping raise her brothers and sisters was early training for the family she would one day have of her own. Being a successful and accomplished homemaker was very important to Dorothy. She loved cooking, canning, gardening and baking - pies were her specialty - and she was saddened when she was no longer able to perform these tasks. As much as she created in her kitchen, she shared with her family and others. Her knitting, embroidery and crochet creations fill the closets and drawers of all her family. She was also steadfast about keeping an immaculate, organized house for her family and the many people who came there to socialize. Dorothy's community involvement included serving her church as a member of Ladies Aid WMF and volunteering at countless functions for over 60 years. She was also active with the Co-op Guild, Happy Centre School and Happy Centre Recreational Co-op Ltd. Dorothy loved to recount stories playing on the Happy Centre baseball team at the pitcher's position. She was also concerned for the upkeep and future of Plainview Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery where her husband and infant son rest. Her leisure interests included bowling, fishing, picking berries, admiring family photos, car rides - especially to check up on the homestead - listening to old -time music, watching television - notably baseball, hockey, Lawrence Welk, game shows and the news - and bingo. She and her husband also enjoyed several trips to B.C. and other destinations to visit family. Dorothy was very proud when she earned her driver's license at age 71. Dorothy was an exceptionally healthy lady until recently who prided herself on her appearance and age, which she would freely share with anyone who asked. Until the end of her life, Dorothy remained in her own home with the aid of her daughter Arlene, who shared with her a very close relationship. They were not only mother and daughter, they were best friends. She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents Paul and Annie Masur, husband Ernie, an infant son, grandson Scott Almasi, brothers Alf, Bob, Charles, Clayton, Donnie, Les and Paul and sisters Audrey and Elsie. She leaves to mourn three children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren -Harvey of Calgary and grandchildren Bob (Glenda), Darren (Tammy) and their children Amy and Terrance and Keith (Jodi) and their children Lief and Ruby; Arlene Almasi (Don) of Melville and grandson Dean; and Larry (Anne) of Yorkton and grandchildren Corrie Stadnyk (Bryan) and their children Shaelyn and Tyson, Renee Haas (Todd) and their children Kelsey and Kaila, Deidre and Curtis (Melissa) and their child Ava. She is also survived by sisters Doris, Ethel, Gladys, Li1 (Pete), and Marge and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A private family prayer service was held Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. from the Chapel of Bailey's Funeral Home in Melville with Gwen Hudy as the Lay Presider.
