Obituary of Nellie Ostafie
OSTAFIE - Nastia (Nellie) Ostafie of Yorkton, formerly of the Mikado district, passed away peacefully at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home on Thursday, July 29, 2010. She was 83 years of age. Nellie was born at Whitebeach, Saskatchewan on November 1, 1926; a daughter of Mike and Mary (Pyontak) Halushka. At the age of 18 Nellie met Walter Ostafie and was married on October 8, 1944. Their marriage was blessed with six children. They farmed in the Mikado district till 1970 and then decided to move to Yorkton. Nellie's great passion was cooking and her garden. Nellie worked for many years as a cook at the Blackstone Hotel, Imperial 400, and post construction camps, to name a few. She opened her home to the Yorkton Terriers and Parkland Mallers and billeted many young boys and became a "BABA" to them all. She felt much joy in preparing meals for her family and friends, no invitation was ever required, "just come and eat". It was well known that just coffee at Nellie's came with a 12 course meal. She even had her moment of fame on CKOS TV cooking show with her perogies. Nellie will be remembered as a good neighbor, loving mother and grandmother, generous and kind to those in need. She took great joy in serving others. Predeceased by her parents; her husband Walter on May 10, 1986; daughter Mae (Kitsch), and a granddaughter, Amy Ostafie. Also by brothers John, Steve, Paul, Peter, and Bill Halushka; Sisters: Jenny (Davis), Elsie (Sakal), and Ann (Mystruk); Sons- in-law: Ron Anstey and Paul Kryski; and her brother Metro, who left home at a young age (whereabouts unknown). She is survived by her children: Frances (Paul) Ripa, Doreen Kryski, Marlene Anstey (Don Burback), Tony Ostafie (Shari), and Don Ostafie (Jan). Grandchildren: Anthony (Janet) Ripa, Gordon Anstey, Wayne Ripa, Christine Kryski, Barb (Doug) Kielo, Kenny (Irene) Kryski, Donna Kitsch, Randy Kitsch, Michael Ostafie (Kari Mahingen), Lianne Ostafie, Ashley Ostafie and Dylon, Dalton and Remmington Ostafie. Great grandchildren: Madison Kryski, Ayden Ostafie, Krista Jenson, Brayden Ostafie, Megan, Erin, Mitchell Kileo. Great great grandchildren: Amy Jensen and Mackenzie Ostafie; numerous nieces, nephews, and her many other relatives and friends. The Prayer Vigil service was held on Sunday evening, August 1, 2010 from St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton. The hymns sung were In the Garden & Psalm 85. Granddaughter Christine gave a tribute on behalf of the family. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday morning, August 2, 2010 from St. Gerards' Church with Rev. Father Francis Hengen officiating. Organist, Katherine Flaman led members of the Parish Choir and the congregation in the singing of the hymns Precious Lord, Take My Hand, Lord Jesus, Of You I will Sing, Come Home, Gather Us Together, Song of the Angels, and Glory & Praise to our God. The lay-readers were Jan Ostafie and Doreen Kryski, the ushers were Dalton & Remmington Ostafie, and Ashley Ostafie and Donna Kitsch presented the gifts. Christian & Stephie Flaman were the altarservers and Lianne Ostafie was the crossbearer. Members of St. Gerard's CWL formed an Honour Guard in the church. Honorary bearers were Christine Kryski, Lianne Ostafie, Barb Ripa, Wayne Ripa, Anthony Ripa and Frances Ripa. The interment followed in the Sliding Hill Christian Cemetery, Mazeppa district with Tony, Don and Michael Ostafie, Gordon Anstey, Kenny Kryski and Randy Kitsch serving as the casketbearers. Arrangements were entrusted to Bailey's Funeral Home. Service Information
