Mrs. Edna Josephine Elder of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home passed away at her residence on Saturday, May 8, 2008 at the age of 96 years. Edna (nee Abelson) was born on June 24, 1913 at Lang, SK; the youngest of five daughters and one son born to Jacob and Synneva Ableson (nee Stephenson). She attended school at Norland and Lang and after completing her education she stayed at home to help her parents. On June 29, 1935 she was united in marriage to Joseph James Elder. After their marriage Joe enlisted in the R.C.A.F. which took Joe and Edna across the country. They were stationed at St. Thomas Ont. where Joe received several promotions. Edna was very active in social activities and spent a lot of time canvassing and volunteering for numerous organizations. She was a kind and caring person especially to her nieces and nephews and their families. As she was a social person Edna could be found talking to many people whether she knew them personally or not; her easy going personality was given away by her smile. In 1940 Joe and Edna took up permanent residence in the Yorkton area where they purchased a farm in the Tonkin district. In 1966 after selling their farm they purchased a home in Yorkton where they lived happily on Fifth Ave. until Joe passed away on May 18, 1984. In 2004 the Queen Elizabeth Court became her home and only recently did she move to the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. Edna was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Synneva Abelson; her husband Joseph; brother Johnny and his wife Hazel Abelson. Also her sisters: Alma Abelson, Mary Abelson, Helen and her husband Ralston Kerr, Mabel and her husband Cecil Johnstone. She leaves to cherish her memory and to celebrate her life numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. The Funeral service was held on Thursday afternoon May 13, 2010 at ST. Andrew's United Church Yorkton with Reverend Doug Craig officiating; Pastor Fred Schneider was the reader. Shani Apland was the organist leading the choir and congregation in the Hymns: "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" and "How Great Thou Art". Dave Farrell and Bob Abelson conveyed the reflections and remembrances of Edna's life. The interment followed in the Garden of Devotion Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Vic, Bryon, Michelle Prieb, Harvey, Jerry, Ken Lutz and Shirley Lockhart serving as Casket Bearers. Remember me when no more, day to day, You tell me of our future that you planned; Only remember me; you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember; do not grieve; For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should be remember and be sad Christina G.
