Obituary of Mary Oystrek
OYSTRECK - With deep sadness we announce the passing of Mary Oystreck, beloved wife of the late Peter S. Oystreck. She went peacefully to her Lord at the Yorkton District Nursing Home on April 25, 2010 with her daughters at her side. Mary was born on July 22, 1912 in Hlubichok Borschow, Poland, She came to Canada on October 4, 1925 with her family. She attended the Prettyview School in the Veregin district. She resided on the family farm in Veregin and helped her parents until she met her husband Peter. They were married on October 21, 1937 in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Rhein. Mary was blessed with four children; Helen, Anne, Wilbert and Victoria. She and her family farmed near Rhein and retired to Yorkton in 1973. Mary lived in her own home until 1992 and moved to Victoria Court for another 13 years. When her health started to fail she moved to the YDNH. Mary enjoyed cooking, sewing and baking. She was famous for her Kolach and donuts; which were delicious. She also enjoyed gardening and going out with her friends and family for coffee. Mary enjoyed visits with her children and grandchildren. She always had a story about her past and enjoyed serving food when you visited and also she would always send you home with a care package. Mary was a faithful parishioner of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and a member of the Women's Association. She was predeceased by her husband Peter; parents Wasyl and Anna (Shumeliak) Sakundiak. Her brother Walter; her eldest daughter Helen in 1995 and son Wilbert in 1999. Her grandson Eugene Zaharia in infancy, her grandson Luc Mongrain in 2001 and son-in-law Marcel Mongrain in 2008. She leaves to mourn her daughters, Anne (Lawrence) German and Vickie Mongrain; son-in-law Mike (Thelma) Zaharia of B.C. and daughter-in-law Verna Oystryk of Calgary and her 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Prayers were held on Thursday, April 29th and the funeral service was held on Friday, April 30th, at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Mel Slashinsky officiating. The responses were led by Gerald Yaholnitsky and parish choir members. The crossbearer was Alanna Yaremko and the banner bearers were Sherry Oystryk and Sandra Watson. Members of the Ukrainian Women's Association paid tribute by way of an honour guard. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Steven Oystryk, Darcy Mongrain, Corey Fransishyn, Brennan Yaremko, Kyle Fransishyn and Cameron Yaremko serving as the casket bearers.
