Obituary of Mike Worobec

On April 21, 2010 Mike Worobec of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and formerly of Arran, Sk. beloved husband of Myrna; passed away at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre at the age of 83 years and 9 months. Mike was born on July 15, 1926 at Fort Pelly, SK (south of Pelly), the only son of Bill and Dora Worobec. He was educated at Fort Pelly, Whitebeech and Evadale School districts. Mike continued his informal education in life at numerous jobs, including working at Campbell's, Kotyk's and Senchuk's sawmills. He also worked on a tobacco farm in Ontario. Mike met and married Myrna Gillespie on September 13, 1959 at Kenville United Church, Kenville, MB. In the spring of 1963, Mike and Myrna moved on to their own homestead in the Poplar Bluff district where they continued to live, farm and raise their family of five children: Linda, Darleen, Gail, Alden, and Tracy. Mike worked very hard at providing a good life for his family, along with Myrna at his side. Working hard and enjoying the fun along the way, with his quick wit, teasing and devilish smile, he always liked to be in the thick of things. Mike loved being with family, friends and neighbors, always having a good time. Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing and trips with his family, especially to Madge Lake and Townsend Lake. Mike worked for the Kamsack School Division as a bus driver for 10 years and enjoyed seeing and teasing the kids on his school bus daily. He retired from bus driving in 1990 at the age of 65. Mike continued to farm until the spring of 1992, when he and Myrna sold the family farm and retired to Yorkton, where they have since resided. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Dora Worobec; a sister, Nettie (Nellie) Carter; father and mother-in-law, Melville & Isabel Gillespie; and by brothers-in-law, Arseny Suchoplas and Blaine Gillespie. Mike leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 50 years, Myrna; five children: Linda Lukey (Rick Yaskiw) of Portage la Prairie, MB; Darleen (Don) Rudachyk of Norquay; Gail (Wesley) Derkatch of Swan River, MB; Alden (Sonia) Worobec of Beaumont, AB; and Tracy (Ken) Kolochuk of Dauphin, MB. Grandchildren: Nicole (Terry), Tyler (Dana); Christine (Jason), Jennifer (Clayton), Jarret; Jamie, Corbin; Kaylin, Grace, Michelle; Megan, Austin. Great grandchildren: Blayse, Maiyah, Conner, Rylen, Sarah, Shaelynn & Ayssen. Sisters: Alvina Suchoplas, Stella (Jack) Kuchma; brother-in-law, Barrie (Lavina) Gillespie; sister-in-law, Georgina Gillespie, and aunt Jessie Yungkurt; as well as his many other relatives, friends, and numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral service was held on Saturday afternoon, April 24, 2010 from the Benito United Church, Benito Manitoba with Reverend Kathy Highmoor officiating. The Hymn Selections were: "Abide with Me", "Amazing Grace', "Beyond the Sunset" and "Going Home". Mike's son Arden gave the reflections and remembrances of his dad on behalf of himself and the family. The interment followed in the Benito Village Cemetery with son Arden serving as Urn Bearer. In memory of Mike Memorial donations may be made to the Saskatchewan Heart and Stroke Fund as gifts of remembrance.
