MOSKAL - Steve Moskal, resident of Hubbard, SK passed away peacefully in St. Peters Hospital, Melville on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the age of 94. He was predeceased by his wife Mary, his brother Mike and sisters Mary Badiuk and Julie Goebel. He will be missed by his sons Danny, David (Pat), Laverne (Penny) and Bobby (Lori), his grandchildren Tanya, Troy, Trevor, Sheri, Pamela, Scott, Damara, Mandy, Wade and Stephan and great-grandchildren, Pascal, Marc- André, Sophie and Olivia. Also a brother Walter (Helen), and sisters: Anne Bondala, Emily (Mike) Kressel, Jean (Stan) Husak, and Lena Mohr. Steve was born in Ituna on Jan. 4, 1916; the son of George Moskal and Rose Wawruck. Steve's mother (Rose) died when he was just 2 ½ years old. In 1919, George Moskal married Pauline Krysowaty, and in 1920, the family moved out to the homestead farm. Steve attended File Hills School which was a mile and half from the farm. At the age of 12, he left school to help on the family farm. When Steve was 17 years old, (1933) his father George passed away. Money was scarce, so in the spring of 1939, Steve walked to Hubbard, caught a ride on a train, and ended up in Revelstoke, BC. Steve found employment at a logging camp. Steve enjoyed working in BC. The work was hard during the day, but there were also opportunities for extra evening work that paid well. Steve made enough to send money home to help with expenses on the family farm. In January of 1940, Steve was able to buy a train ticket home to Ituna. In the spring of 1941, Steve started working at Wawruck's farm by St. Stanislaus School, north of Hubbard. In the process of working at the Wawruck's he met Mary Chorney. Steve and Mary were married October 26, 1941. They farmed north of Hubbard until 1949 when they and their young family moved into Hubbard. In 1953, Steve began working as a carpenter for the Melville North School Unit, building schools, repairing existing schools and teacherages. Steve built the school addition in Hubbard, built many homes in the surrounding area. Steve spent many hours doing volunteer work for the Hubbard community. He spent several years teaching carpentry to children of the Hubbard community as a 4-H leader. Steve was a member of the Hubbard Recreational Board and the Hubbard Diamond Jubilee Committee. Steve and his wife Mary enjoyed curling and were members of the Hubbard Curling Club. He continued to both farm and work as a carpenter until 1993 when he retired from farming. During his retirement, Steve spent many hours in his garage, building sleighs, hardwood cabinets, and when it became difficult to master the finer woodworking detail, he built doghouses. He always kept himself busy working in his garage. Steve will be fondly remembered in the Hubbard and Ituna community for his commitment to his wife Mary during her stay in the Ituna Pioneer Lodge. Prayers were held on Sunday evening, Feb. 21, 2010 and the Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, all from Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ituna. Very Rev. Father Boris Kyba, C.Ss.R. was the Celebrant. Sheri Guy was the crossbearer and Laverne Moskal read the Epistle. The interment took place in the Parish cemetery with Scott, Mandy, Stephan, Troy, Damara and Trevor Moskal serving as the casketbearers. Arrangements were entrusted to Bailey's Funeral Home.
