Obituary of Kay Otchenash

OTCHENASH - Kay Otchenash (nee Parfenuik) was born on September 2, 1922 in the Hubbard district of Saskatchewan, a daughter of Sam and Anna Parfenuik (nee Michasiw). She left home when she was 17 and worked in the Toronto area for a few years, then returned to Hubbard and married Adam Shubaly. They had two children, Gary Grant Sam and Karen Ann, and relocated to Winnipeg. When the children were quite young, Adam passed away suddenly. Thanks to the loving support of her family, she was able to raise the children by herself. After seven years as a widow, she met and married John Otchenash. A year later, they had a daughter, Donna Marie. During her life, Kay worked several jobs, including as a waitress and a nurse's aide. She started off working with polio patients, transferred to Misericordia Hospital and ended up finding her niche at the Children's Hospital, where she worked for 20 years. Due to her caring nature, she was a natural source of comfort for the sick children. Upon retirement, she moved back to Hubbard, where she quickly became an active member of the Hubbard social club and Holy Cross church. During this time they enjoyed re-establishing old friendships and became local cribbage champions several times over. Unfortunately her health began to decline and she spent the last years of her life at the Ituna Pioneer Health Care Centre. Kay's passions in life included gardening, cooking, and entertaining family and friends - the more, the merrier! She especially enjoyed visits from her grandchildren. She will be missed. She passed away peacefully on January 26, 2010. She is survived by her children Gary Shubaly of Calgary, Karen Shubaly-Molnar of Winnipeg, Donna Goring (John) of Victoria; grandchildren: Matthew Molnar (Amy) of Winnipeg, Jared & Robin Goring of Victoria; brother Walter Parfenuik of Ituna; sisters Steffa Dorosh of Regina and Emma Parfenuik of Hubbard and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, both of her husbands, four of her sisters, and four of her brothers. The prayers were held on Monday evening, February 1, 2010 and the Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday morning, February 2, 2010, all from the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hubbard. Very Rev. Father Boris Kyba, C.Ss.R was the Celebrant. The sacristan was William Zenkewich. Cantors, Wayne Boczulak, Ladmer Moskal and Heidi Spilchuk led in the singing of the responses. The crossbearer was Jared Goring and the Epistle reader was Grace Winnicki. The interment followed in the Parish Cemetery with Peter Muzyka, Matthew Molnar, Arlene Horwath, Robin Goring, Lloyd Ullrich and Rick Dorosh serving as the casketbearers. Arrangements were entrusted to Bailey's Funeral Home. Service Information Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 10:00am, Exaltation of Holy Cross Interment Details
