FOOKES - Una Elaine Fookes (nee Daum) was born July 20, 1939 in Shell River Municipality, Manitoba. The eighth of 12 children born to John and Margaret Daum (Schaerer), she grew up in the Calder McNutt area. Una moved to Lanigan Sask at the age of 18 where she worked for Saskatchewan Telecommunications until 1958 when she returned to Yorkton and continued her career as a telephone operator. She retired from SaskTel in 1999. On December 5, 1959 she married Ken Fookes. Ken and Una made their first home in Yorkton and in 1964 moved to Tonkin, where they build their first home. Una was an accomplished artist and writer. Two of her favorite pastimes were sewing and crocheting. Una was an avid reader and often relaxed with a good book and word search puzzles. Una's flower gardens were her pride and joy, and the envy of the neighborhood. For the summer of 2009 she planted 1069 flowers around her and Ken's home in Yorkton. Una enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and traveled to Ontario and BC regularly to visit her family. Una would play games, do arts and crafts with her grandchildren and loved to have the kids in the kitchen teaching them to cook and bake. Una lived life to the fullest and truly believed that every day was a gift. Una passed away peacefully in Regina General Hospital in the early morning of January 11, 2010. She left us in the presence of two of her children and the one true love of her life, Ken.Una is predeceased by her parents, John and Margaret Daum, 2 sisters, Elizabeth and Agnes, and brother Henry. Una is survived by her husband Ken and her children, Laurel (Frank Chiarizia, grandchildren Mena and Conrad) of Langley, B.C., Karen (Murray Marshall, grandchildren Derek and Kelsey) of Yorkton Saskatchewan, Darren (Bev Zwirsky, grandchildren, Eric and Justin) of Tonkin, Saskatchewan and Trent (Brenda Pawliw, grandchildren Bram and Byron) of Owen Sound, Ontario and sisters, Eileen, Margaret, Grace and Jean and her brothers John, Rudolph, Robert and Frank. She was and is loved by all of her family and many friends. Her laughter will be missed but will be held in our hearts for all time. A service of comfort was held on Thursday evening, January 14, 2010 from the chapel of Bailey's Funeral Home. The funeral service was held on Friday, January 15, 2010 from St. Paul Lutheran Church in Yorkton with Rev. Fred Schneider officiating. Organist, Carla Laycock led the congregation in the singing of the hymns 'Just As I Am' and 'Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness'. Soloist Ray Yost sang 'How Great Thou Art'. Family members gave tributes & remembrances and recited poems written by Una. The interment took place in the Garden of St. John at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with James Davis Jr., Gerald Schepp, Graham Fuchs, Hugh Davis, Murray Marshall and Frank Chiarizia serving as the casketbearers.
