Obituary of Martha Novakowski

NOVAKOWSKI - Martha Novakowski, resident of the Country Meadows Care Home in Neepawa, passed away on Monday, October 26, 2009. She was 89 years of age. Martha Novakowski was born on April 23, 1920 in the Playmore district of Saskatchewan; a daughter of John and Lena (nee Zazelenchuk) Matechuk. She was raised on the family farm and received her education in the district. On June 16, 1940 she was united in marriage to Michael Zelaney. This union was blessed with two children, Albert & Marion. The couple farmed in the Wroxton district until Michael's death in July of 1968. Martha eventually moved to make her home in Yorkton. While in Yorkton, Martha worked at City Bakery for many years. In December of 1974, Martha was united in marriage to Carl Novakowski. Carl predeceased her on December 6, 2002. In 2003 Martha moved to Neepawa, Manitoba to be closer to her daughter. She became a resident of the Country Meadows Care Home, where she had resided until the time of her passing. Her hobby's included camping, fishing, and she enjoyed going to dances. Martha also enjoyed being with her family and friends, she was proud of her children and grandchildren. Playing cards was a favorite pastime. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii and Mexico. Besides Mike & Carl, Martha was also predeceased by a step-brother John Oystrick, she is survived by her children: son Albert (Natalie) Zelaney of Vernon BC, and Marion (Taras) Robulak of Neepawa. Manitoba; grandchildren: Brian Zelaney (Rachelle); Cheryl (Todd) Hanna; Keith Robulak; Mindy (Andy) Poulton; and great grandchildren: Shan-Lee, Morgan, Chelsea, Tyson, Matthew and Jaden. Sisters: Mary Derbowka of Saskatoon; Effie Hardy of Yorkton; Ethel Styba of Winnipeg; and Lorraine (William) Peleshytyk of Calder; numerous nieces, nephews, and her many other relatives and friends, and extended Novakowski families. Prayers were held on Thursday, October 29, 2009 from the Chapel of Bailey's Funeral Home, Yorkton with Rev. Father Vladimir Kolpakov C.Ss.R. officiating. Granddaughter Mindy Poulton gave the eulogy. The Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, October 30, 2009 from St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Peter Pidskalny C.Ss.R. as Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus and Parish Choir members. The crossbearers were Chelsea Poulton and Morgan Robulak, Cheryl Hanna read the epistle. The interment took place in the Garden of Crucifixion in the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Andy Poulton, Keith Robulak, Brian Zelaney, Todd Hanna, Shen-Lee Robulak and Bernie Peleshytyk serving as the casketbearers.
