Obituary of Joseph Arthur Crowe

FSIN Senator Joseph Arthur Crowe June 02, 1927 to October 04, 2009 (Known to many as Joe Crowe) Joseph Arthur Crowe was born on the Standing Buffalo Reserve, near Fort Qu'Appelle. He was the first born to Louis & Vitaline (Nee: Standing Buffalo) Crowe, a grandson to Julius and Julia Standing Buffalo and Aggie and Willy Smoker and the late Simon Crowe. On November 9, 1948, Joseph married Marie LaVallee from Cowessess; she was the daughter of Antoine and Vitaline LaVallee. -1955 Joseph Crowe was the youngest elected Chief in Canada. During this time he worked closely with the Chiefs that formed the founding body known today as the FSIN. When it was first founded it was known then as Federation of Saskatchewan Indians. -In 1957 Joe moved his family to Carronport to attend the Briar Crest College to complete his high school. -1959 they moved to Yorkton where he began his journeyman training in Carpentry. -In the spring of 1961 Joseph Crowe was elected Chief of Kahkewistahaw by Acclamation, as a result he would move with his family back to Kahkewistahaw to lead his people. -In 1967 Joe was an integral part of the development of the very first Indian Court Worker program with the FSIN & Province of Saskatchewan and later became one of the first Workers. In 1969 Joe entered Guard Training for the Prison System and worked at the Joyceville Penitentiary in Ontario. -From 1970 -1979 Joe moved to Los Angeles and Hollywood, CA, Las Vegas, NV and Toronto, all the while maintaining his passion for his people. Throughout this period of time various organizations called upon him to do research regarding treaty land entitlement and specific land claims. -1982 Joseph Crowe moved back home to Kahkewistahaw. He remained active in the Band Council from 1982 until his induction to the FSIN Senate in 1993. -He remained active with various portfolios and tables and holds a passion in the pursuit of First Nations Sovereign Jurisdiction and the protection and restoration of our Treaty Rights. -Senator Crowe remained active with First Nations Politics and as RCMP Commanding Officers Aboriginal Advisory Committee Member until his passing. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, great grandchildren and visiting with friends and colleagues. Senator Crowe is predeceased by his father Louis Crowe; mother Vitaline Crowe (nee Standing Buffalo) the mother of his children Marie Crowe (nee LaVallee); his children Wallace; Stanford; Freda; Elaine and Ross. His brothers; Stanley; Ronald; Charles and one in infancy. His sisters; Lena and Margaret. One grandson and one great granddaughter. And his adopted son Wallace Taypotat. He is survived by his daughter Sharon Green (Wayne); his grandchildren Brad Louison (Carla) and their children; Jacob; Tina; Zach and Brian. Elaine (Deano) and their children; Farley (Misty); Neil; Sarah; Emily and Autumn; Sherilyn (Greg) and their children; Sharissa (Mike); Dallas and Tyler. Lawrence (Verna) and their children; Mike; Tony and Angel; Carol Stephenson and her children; Brandon; Ashley; Shayna and Skyler. Rob (Tanya) and Their children Ty and Sierra; Kim and Roger; His sister Hazel (Don) McArthur and their family; Daughter in law Darlene Taypotat and her children Greg; Carrie (Josh) and Shayna. Joe is also survived by many family; friends and relatives too numerous to mention.
