MARI ANCHUK - Nick Marianchuk of Theodore, SK passed away at the Theodore Health Center on Sunday, May 17, 2009. He was 86 years of age. Nick, the third of nine sons, was born on June 6, 1922 at the family farm in the Theodore district to Dmitri (Matt) and Helen (nee Paley) Marianchuk. Soon after Nick was born, the family relocated to Farley, a railroad station near Saskatoon, SK, where Nick's father worked on the CN railroad. When Nick was 6 years of age the family returned to the Theodore area and started a homestead on a quarter section of land purchased by his father. Over the years he helped with establishing the homestead and clearing the land. He attended War End school until the age of fifteen, after which he went out to work for farmers in the Theodore and Rosetown areas, and at a sawmill in the Nipawin area. In 1945 Nick began working for the RM of Insinger, digging dug-outs, brush cutting, road building and clearing snow from area roads and old Highway 14 during the winter months. Nick later purchased his own Caterpillar to clear bush and break land in the area. The year 1950 brought about many changes for Nick as he purchased his own land and began farming a few miles south east of Theodore, built a new house in town, and married Phyllis Domanko on Nov. 5. They were blessed with three boys - Myles, Barry and Mark. Farming, raising a family and involvement in local activities, such as serving on the Village of Theodore Council from 1967-69 and 1971-73, and on the local Ukrainian Orthodox Church board, kept Nick busy and active for many years. He was your typical Saskatchewan farmer, having a deep passion for his land and a great love for his family. He would be on the land as soon as he could in the spring, and kept a watchful eye on his crops until harvest, his favorite time of the growing season. Nick was a devoted husband and father, always making time for his family's activities. He logged many miles and spent countless hours in rinks and in the stands during the many years of involvement with the boy's curling, hockey, and fastball. He watched many Yorkton Terrier hockey games and Insinger Cardinal and Theodore Chief fastball games over the years. Nick looked forward to family gatherings during holidays and weekends, enjoying his wife's finely prepared food, the odd drink, and the laughter that was always part of these special family times. In 1985 Nick quit farming and spent his retirement years helping look after the home and yard, faithfully attending coffee row, fixing and tinkering in his garage, and spending quality time with family and his grandchildren. He held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and cherished the time spent with them. Going fishing, playing ball in the backyard, watching hockey games, and just joking around were a few of the things Grandpa enjoyed doing with his grandchildren. He was very proud of his children's and grandchildren's achievements. Nick was a generous, fun-loving man with a keen sense of humour and many a witty comment. He kept life simple, and was most content at home surrounded by the love of family and his relationships with friends. He found pleasure simply sitting in his chair and reading the paper or watching a hockey game on TV. Nick maintained his ability to smile and make others laugh even after becoming a resident at the Theodore Health Center, where he received exceptional care from the staff and daily love, care and attention from his wife Phyllis. Nick was predeceased by his parents, Matt and Helen; brothers George (in infancy), John, Fred, Harry, Sam, Morris, and Gerry; father- and mother-in-law Stefan and Irene Domanko; sisters-in-law Bella (William) Domanko, Donna (Gerry) Marianchuk and Carol (Norman) Marianchuk. Nick will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis of Theodore; three children and five grandchildren: Myles of Olds, AB; Barry (Brenda) of Yorkton, SK and children Brett of Yorkton, Braden of Regina, SK and Scott of Saskatoon, SK; Mark (Jennifer) and children Rylan and Jorden of Humboldt, SK; brother Norman (Vicki) of Toronto, ON; brothers-in-law: William Domanko of Saskatoon, SK and Joe (Olga) Dumenko of Flin Flon, MB; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Prayers were held on Wednesday evening, May 20, 2009 from Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton. The funeral service was held on Thursday morning, May 21, 2009 from St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Theodore. Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky officiated and Joe Moldowan served as the Palamar. Cantor, Gerald Yaholnitsky, assisted by members of the Parish Choir, led in the singing of the responses. The crossbearers were Rylan and Jorden Marianchuk. The interment followed in the Parish Cemetery with Brett, Braden and Scott Marianchuk, Bill Domanko, Gordon Minken and Mike Luciw serving as the casketbearers. A memorial luncheon followed at the Theodore Recreational Complex where son Mark gave a tribute and offered thanks on behalf of the family. Arrangements were in care of Bailey's Funeral Home.
