Obituary of William Petruniak

PETRUNIAK - Mr. William Petruniak of Calder passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 81 years of age. William was born October 6, 1927 in the Calder district to parents Steve and Nellie (nee Yaremko) Petruniak. He received his education at Torsk School and helped on the family farm. William worked for area farmers doing stooking, threshing and general farm work. He spent one winter in Reagan, Ontario doing bush work. He worked at a Lumber Mill camp in the Pas, MB and also cutting pulp wood in Attic, Ontario. He then began his career in carpentry. He became a journeyman carpenter, working for the following: Geno & Tommy Marteniuk building low rental homes in North Battleford, Geno Ostalfie at GA Construction, Perry Homes in Edmonton and after suffering an injury he returned home to Calder. Here he continued with carpentry and small engine repairs. William was musically talented, playing the violin, cymbaly and guitar. He enjoyed spending time fishing and gardening. William is survived by seven sisters, Dora Werner of Churchbridge, Anne Bennett of Canora, Marjorie Mankish of Calder, Kathleen (Ed) Boychuk of Canora, Shirley (Erik) Hansen of Redvers, Virginia Wandy of Calder and Wilma Austin of Fort McMurray, AB and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents; two brothers James and George; brothers-in-law Roland Werner, Dan Mankish, Nick Wandy and Gerald Bennett and a sister-in-law Victoria Petruniak. Prayers were held on Monday, April 27th and the funeral service on Tuesday, April 28th at Yorkton Memorial Gardens. Family Centre with Rev. Father Patrick Powalinsky of St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church officiating. The responses were led Walter Balabuk and parish choir members. The cross bearer was Steve Rublitz. The interment followed in the Garden of Gethsemane at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Erik Hansen, Gerald Shymko, Norman Wandy, Steven Wandy, Robert Boychuk and Arthur Martinuk serving as the casket bearers.
