Obituary of Nellie Popowich

POPOWICH - Mrs. Nellie Popowich, formerly of Theodore passed away on April 9, 2009 at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. She was 98 years of age. Nellie was born in the Whitesand area on October 15, 1910, a daughter of Sam and Annie Popowich. On November 4, 1931 Nellie was united in marriage to John N. Popowich. They farmed in the Drobot district and later retired to an acreage near Theodore in 1951. After her husband's passing in 1985 Nellie continued to reside on the acreage until 2003 when she moved to Theodore. In September of 2008 she moved to the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. Nellie enjoyed baking, tending to her raspberries and gardening in the summer and crocheting in the winter. Predeceased by her parents Sam and Annie; six brothers Wasyl, John, Mike, Nick, Fred and Dan; three sisters Maggie Spilchen, Mary Diak and Pauline Pawliw and a son-in-law Wally Chabun; she leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish her memory sons, Peter (Mariette) of Toronto and Steve (Mary) of Burlington; daughter Ann (Emily) of Calgary; eight grandchildren Debbie (Thierry), Gary (Maria), Carole, David (Litsa), Cathy (Doug), Tracy (Noel), Cheryl (Mark) and Roxanne; seven great grandchildren Catherine, Christopher, Nicholas, Michael, Samuel, Laura and Jacob; one brother George (Lena) Popowich of Yorkton and numerous nieces and nephews. Prayers were held on Monday, April 13th at the Chapel of Bailey's Funeral Home. Requiem Divine Liturgy was held Tuesday, April 14th, at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Yorkton with Rev. Father Vladimir Kolpakov, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita & Parish Choir Members. The crossbearer was Garry Popowich and the epistle reader was Steve Popowich. The interment took place at Yorkton City Cemetery with Paul Shlahetka, Stephen Shumay, Wayne Popowich, David Popowich, Gary Popowich and Ray Robinson serving as the casket bearers Memories of grandma's life were shared by Tracy O'Neil on behalf of all the grandchildren. Xpuctoc Bockpec! Christ Is Risen! Funeral arrangements were in care of Bailey's Funeral Home.
