Obituary of Katrina Koshman

KOSHMAN - Katrina Koshman was born on November 1, 1921 in the Westbrook district of Saskatchewan; one of twenty children born to George and Sophie (nee Yarmie) Paley. She attended the Westbrook School. On April 16th, 1939 she was united in marriage to Steve Koshman and the couple settled on the farm at Westbrook. Steve and Katie retired from the farm in 1973 and moved into Theodore. At the time, Katie took the job of caretaker at the Post Office and Steve helped with the work. Katrina will be remembered as a devoted member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and had served as Treasurer for the Westbrook Ladies Club. She loved to cook and bake. Being close to nature, gardening and keeping the yard in excellent condition was important to her. Katrina was always interested in the activities of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She spoke of them with pride in their accomplishments and looked forward to their visits. Nobody left her home without coffee and lunch. Following the death of Steve in 1986, Katie continued to maintain her home in Theodore until becoming a resident of the Theodore Manor in 2001. As her health further declined, she became a resident of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home on March 1, 2004, where she resided until her passing on Sunday, March 9, 2008. She was 86 years of age. Besides her husband Steve, Katie was predeceased by her father George in 1956, her mother Sophie in 1980; two brothers in infancy, and brothers George, John, Nick & Fred; and by sisters Victoria Kucheron and Alice Stefanyshyn. She leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish her memory her three children: two daughters: Evelyn (Ivan) Biblow of Nanaimo BC; Rosalee (Orest) Dorosh of Lethbridge, AB; and Ernest (Lynnette) Koshman of Nepean, Ont.; Seven grandchildren: Michelle Terry (Mark), Shannan (Rick) Hugie, Shawn (Lynn) Dorosh, Shane Dorosh, Mikkyal Koshman (Cherie), and Scott (Cheryl) and Stephan Koshman; Seven great grandchildren: Matthew, James and Katie-Rose Terry; Payton and Sienna Hugie; Cheryl Lishman and Andrew Koshman. Seven sisters: Dora Stadnyk of Niagra Falls, ON; Mary Kytanko (John) of Thunder Bay, ON; Lillian Watt of Thompson, MB; Lena Meirs (Al) of Portage la Prairie, MB; Verna Antonishyn (Andy) of Foam Lake; Elsie Warcomika of Yorkton; and Suzy Sukorokoff of Saskatoon. Four brothers: Bill (Mary) Paley of Winnipeg; Alex (Dora) Paley of Yorkton; Harry (Sylvia) Paley of Yorkton; Steve (Shirley) Paley of Theodore; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and her many other relatives and friends. Prayers were held on Thursday evening, March 13, 2008 at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton. The funeral service was held on Friday, March 14, 2008 from Holy Transfiguration Church with Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky as Celebrant. Cantor, Gerald Yaholnitsky, assisted by members of the Parish Choir led in the singing of the responses. The crossbearer was Michelle Terry, and the bannerbearers were Shannan and Rick Hugie. The interment took place in the Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Parish Cemetery, Westbrook district with Robert Mehling, Robert Engle, Allan Hutzul, Michael Stefanyshen, Ron Kucheran and Mike Baranesky serving as the casketbearers.
