Obituary of Josie Bernakevitch

BERNAKEVITCH - Mrs. Josie Bernakevitch (nee: Nayko) was born on March 19, 1924 in the Ituna District of Saskatchewan. She was a daughter born to Paul and Mary (nee: Kilniak) Nayko. She and her nine brothers and sisters were raised on the family farm and attended St. Joseph's School. In 1945, Josie moved to Windsor ON where she worked at the Firestone Building assisting in the manufacturing of shells for the army. In 1947, Josie returned to the Ituna district and on October 24, 1948 at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ituna she was united in marriage with Walter Bernakevitch. The happy couple settled and made their home in Kelliher where they raised their two children Wayne and Pat. Throughout Josie's 58 years in Kelliher, she was an active church, social and volunteer member of the community. There was rarely a town event at which Josie wasn't present and when it came to the local sporting events, she was always in attendance. Josie's greatest joys included her family and her proudest moments were in her children and her grandchildren. She was an extremely loving Wife, Mother and Baba. Josie passed away on October 14, 2006 at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina. She was 82 years of age. Josie was predeceased by her husband Walter, her parents Paul and Mary, eight siblings, Tillie Schabel, Jennie Zarzecki, Grace Karkut, and Frank, Walter, Tony, Mike and Adolph Nayko, and her stepfather William Michalko. Josie is lovingly remembered by her Sister Emily Kapusiak of Toronto ON, her eldest son Wayne and his wife Marj of Regina and their three children; Lindsay and wife Jill of Vancouver BC, Brendan of Charleston SC and Adrienne of Cambridge MA, her second son Pat and his wife Lorelei of Regina and their two children; Paul of Shilo MB and David of Regina, and her many nieces, nephews and friends. Prayers were held on Thursday, October 19, 2006 from St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Kelliher. The Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, October 20, 2006 from St. Vladimir's Church with Very Rev. Father Boris Kyba C.Ss.R as the Celebrant. The crossbearer was Steve Schabel, the epistle-reader was Lindsay Bernakevitch. The cantor, Ostap Piasta led in the singing of the responses. The interment followed in the parish cemetery with Kenny Karkut, Allan Nayko, and Paul, David, Lindsay and Brendan Bernakevitch serving as the casketbearers.
