Obituary of Cora Nystrom

NYSTROM - Mrs. Cora Nystrom of Yorkton and formerly of the Theodore district beloved wife of the late Oscar Nystrom passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2006 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre after a short illness. She was 99 years of age. Cora was born on May 25, 1907 to Theodore and Bertha Sophie (nee Hoflund) Dahl of Theodore, SK. She attended the Sandy River School and later began working for the Nystrom family where she met Oscar and they were united in marriage in 1928. Cora and Oscar farmed in the Theodore area and raised four children together. Cora worked at her husband's side through the years, providing for their family. She also took the role of caregiver, first to her mother and later to two of her brothers as well as a brother-in-law. Cora loved the outdoors and had a large garden every year and picked wild berries to prepare for the winter. She and Oscar opened their home to family and friends. In 1972 Cora and Oscar retired from farming and relocated to 336 Betts Ave. in Yorkton, where she lived until her passing. Cora continued her love of the outdoors and throughout the years, always planted a large vegetable garden as well as fruit trees and an abundance of flowers. She also took up quilting. She and Oscar had the opportunity to do some travelling to visit relatives in Ontario and British Columbia. Family was important to Cora and she took an interest in he grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a strong and independent lady who accepted what life offered and was still very much in control. Predeceased by her husband Oscar; her parents; five brothers; one sister; and a son-in-law George Shumay. She will be lovingly remembered by her family: Edgar (Lillian) of Renfrew, ON and their children: Jeffrey (Josee) Nystrom (Garret, Jordan) of Hudson, PQ, Darryl (Marjo) Nystrom ( Alyssia, Matthew) of Okotoks, AB; Eleanor (Lionel) Fedorowich of Yorkton and their children Sandra (Cam) Lock (Graham, Matthew) of Winnipeg, Barb (Warren) Stromberg (Jordan, Kelsey, Arielle) of Regina, Angie (Ron) Bohemier (Rebecca, Elizabeth) of Winnipeg, Wanda Fedorowich (Tim Stromberg) of Yorkton, Ron (Tammy) Fedorowich (Paige) of Yorkton; Shirley Shumay (George Goldsmith) of Yorkton and her children John (Sherry) Shumay (Ryan, Tyler) of Good Spirit Acres, Wayne (Sheila) Shumay (Kristin, Meagan, Corby) of Yorkton, Jackie (Al) Elsasser (Michael) (Erin) of Saskatoon, Darrin (Jill) of Saskatoon; Bev Nystrom (Bernie Egilsson) and her son Warren (Tanya) Nystrom (Keenan, Bryn, Aden) of Yorkton, sister Edna Brown of Naniamo BC, and numerous nieces, nephews and her many other relatives and friends. The Funeral service was held on Friday afternoon, September 15, 2006 from St. Paul Lutheran Church, Yorkton, SK., with Pastor Fred Schneider officiating. Carla Laycock was the organist leading the congregation in the Hymns: "Rock Of Ages", "All Things Bright And Beautiful" and "In The Garden". The reflections of Cora's life were given by granddaughters: Jackie Elsasser and Sherry Shumay; with all those who knew and loved Cora serving as Honourary Bearers.
