Magdalena (Maggie) Sawchenko, widow of Mike Sawchenko and Josef Klimek passed peacefully at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on January 6, 2022, at the age of 96. Maggie was born in Poland, where she grew up and attended school. When she was 16 years old, she was sent to Germany to work at a concentration camp. She returned to Poland and married her first love Josef Klimek, and together they raised four children. Maggie’s children and their families were her whole world until the day she died. After Josef’s passing, Maggie moved to Sault Ste Marie, Ontario where her two daughters immigrated during prior years. There, she met Mike and moved to Pelly, Saskatchewan where he resided. Maggie married Mike in 1985, and Pelly, Saskatchewan became her “hometown” here in Canada. Together, they enjoyed traveling all over Arizona and Florida. It was with Mike, that Maggie learned to drive. She got her license for the first time when she was 60 years old and even hauled a camper down south for the winter months. Maggie loved reminiscing of the past, telling stories of olden days, and surrounding herself with family. Her oldest granddaughters have countless stories of their summers spent at Babcia’s. Her favorite hobbies were gardening and baking. Her garden was her pride and joy, she spent countless hours tending to her fruits and vegetables. Her children and grandchildren were often found in the garden as well, picking raspberries and shelling peas. Maggie loved catering to everyone and anyone who entered her home with either food cooking on the stove, baking in the oven or already on the table. She made the best raspberries compote, deserts, scuffles, and buns. She could make hundreds of pierogies in a short afternoon. She didn’t use Western Medicine, and believed that a milk, honey, and garlic concoction could cure any ailment. Maggie had a very competitive nature when playing shuffleboard, winning multiple tournaments at the Pelly Drop-in Centre! Anyone who played against her had to bring their best game. Her competitiveness continued when playing cards; one of her favorites was King Corners. She also enjoyed a good game of “Trouble” and was often found to beat her kids and grandkids. When she was not gardening or competing, she was found knitting watching soap operas, Bachelorette or Dancing with the Stars. She knitted blankets, scarfs, sweaters, and baby tuque for her great grandchildren. Maggie was a devoted Roman Catholic her entire life and believed in the power of prayer. She rarely missed Sunday mass and never went to bed before saying her prayers. She prayed for her family and their well being every single day. Maggie was a devoted Wife, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and friend. She touched every life that was privileged to meet and know her. She was the strongest, bravest, loving and stubborn woman many came across. Maggie is survived by her four children Stanislaw (Maria) Klimek, Franek (Jadwiga) Klimek, Barbara (Tadeusz) Mrozinski, and Krystyna (Henry) Loza. She is also survived by her grandchildren and their families; Jarek, Kasia, Anna, Aleksandra, Peter, Paul, Betty, Krystyna, Andrew, Megan, Mark, Tommy, and Angelica. Service Details.
