She grew up in Saltcoats where her dad was the school principal. Hazel had one older brother named Ralph who passed in 2008. Hazel was a good student who played the piano and loved math. When Hazel graduated she went to Winnipeg to train as a radio range operator. She worked at a weather station in Sioux Lookout, Ontario and then Medicine Hat, which was groundbreaking work for a young woman, and she had many stories of how this was viewed by the men who traditionally did this work. She returned home to Yorkton in December of 1946 and in January began work as a telephone operator. She met Robert (Bob) Spice and they married in 1949. Together they had three children - Sandra, Don and Sharon. Over the years Hazel ran two home-based businesses – Quality Rubber Stamps and the Yarn Barn. In addition to running her businesses, she was actively involved in the UCW group at St. Andrews United Church in Yorkton. She was a great baker, renowned in particular for the best angel food cakes. She was an avid knitter and crafter and close with the friends in her neighbourhood on Irwin Avenue. Hazel and Bob took regular trips to Alberta and British Columbia, and before Bob’s passing in 1981 went to California, the Maritimes and took a Caribbean cruise. After Bob passed, Hazel went on a road trip to Mexico with her brother Ralph and his wife Gladys. Hazel’s wit and practical wisdom will be missed by those who are left behind: Sandra and David Baron and their children Jesse and Candice Baron (Liam, Eddie and Jacob) and Brittany and Mike Staines (Jillian and Eli). Don and Wendy Spice and their son Tyler and Kim Spice (Isabelle and Jack). Sharon Janzen and her partner Kevin Francis, Sharon’s children Logan and Janelle Janzen (Taylor, Jake, Ethan), Morgan Janzen, Landon and Rachel Janzen, and Jordan Janzen. Service Details.
