Obituary of Sophie Ann Obuch
OBUCH - Sophie Ann Obuch (nee Marshall) a lifelong resident of Ituna Saskatchewan passed away peacefully June 24, 2023 at the Pioneer Lodge in Ituna at the blessed age of 92. Sophie was born on her family farm in the Churchill District and was the ninth born out of ten children. As a child growing up she was surrounded by her cousins who were part of the Patsula and Parada families. Sophie shared many stories of her childhood, from her school days at the Churchill school where she walked through fields to school in all types of weather until she was old enough to ride her horse, and in the winter take a sleigh. She was a dedicated daughter working hard, cooking and cleaning to support her family. She remained on the family farm until the age of 20 when she ventured to Toronto to meet up with some of her siblings who were living there. Sophie enjoyed city living, going to dances, hockey games, fishing and skating. She worked at Loblaws for a short time but missed her mom and cherished Ituna.
Upon arriving back to Ituna she met the love of her life Harry Obuch, who would become her husband of 57 years. They married on November 11,1953 and together they were successful and passionate farmers. Sophie loved farming alongside her husband. They raised many animals, and had abundant gardens. In 1990 they retired from farming and moved into the town, continuing to have a bountiful garden and taking pride in their property. Together Harry and Sophie took numerous trips to Vancouver and Toronto traveling by train or car to visit relatives. Sophie was a faithful and caring woman who volunteered for many years at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church. She continued to be an excellent cook sharing her talents making perogies for church fundraising events and helping at Easter to make Paska and babkas.
Sophie joins in eternal peace her husband Harry Obuch, her parents Mike and Mary; sisters and their husbands: Nelly and Otto Lips, Kay and Johnny Ciszewski, Molly and Johnny Wychowaniec; brothers and their wives: John and Nellie Marshall, Frank and Doris Marshall, brothers Peter Marshall, Joe Marshall and Stanley Marshall, nieces Virginia, Delia, Florence, Bernadette, and Diane.
She leaves behind her beloved sister Emily Graham (Ron) of Scarborough, sister-in-law Anne Marshall of Newmarket, nephews Roman (Debbie), Rick, Brian (Janet), nieces Gloria (Orest), nieces Barbara (Norman), Diane (Jerry), Christine (TJ), Carrie (Kelly) and Nancy and cousin Agnes Petrowski (Szarkowicz) as well as many great nieces and nephews. Sophie was blessed with many wonderful friends who cared and visited with her, often she shared great company with Elaine and Dave Elash and Vera and Jim Keisig all of whom she spent many memorable moments with. She also had a wonderful relationship with many children in the community who she adored.
Sophie Obuch will be remembered for her sharp wit, youthful spirit,generosity, caring and nurturing nature. We will miss her tremendously.
The Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, June 30, 2023 at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ituna with Rev. Father Basil Malowany as the a with Rev. Father Basil Malowany as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Ladmer Moskal, Heidi Spilchuk and Wayne Boczulak. The cross bearer was Janna Keisig and the epistle readers were Christine Schiavo and Carolyn Kinsman. The interment followed in Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery with Aaron Marshall, Brian Marshall, Kelly Kinsman, Jim Keisig, Dave Elash and TJ Schiavo serving as the casket bearers. Memorial donations in memory of Sophie may be made to The Ituna Health Centre or Arthritis Research Canada as gifts of remembrance.
