Obituary of Garry Holstein

Garry Holstein was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on April 24, 1943 to Albert and Margaret (nee Fossey) Holstein. He grew up in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, along with his younger sister Shelley. He attended Burke School and later received his high school education at the Yorkton Collegiate Institute (YCI). It was during this time that he was involved in the Air Cadet training program and played hockey and basketball. During summer holidays he often worked alongside his father who mentored him in the trade of carpentry. All that training was later put to good use when Garry built two of his own homes and finished off seven basements. Garry love to spend time out at his Uncle Earl‘s farm, along with his cousins. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Valerie Bohn.

 

Garry and Valerie attended Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was a follower of Christ and was baptized in 1964. The two married in Ebenezer, Saskatchewan on October 15, 1966, and lived in Yorkton. Garry worked as an accountant for the City of Yorkton for ten years. In 1973 he and Valerie purchased a farm just north of Ebenezer. In 1977 he worked as a machinist at Morris Industries, and later as an accountant. In 1989, the couple moved back to Yorkton. After Morris Industries restructured, he was transferred to the Head Office in Saskatoon in 1994. In 2003 he semi-retired and he and Valerie moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta. It was at this time that he took on the role of Financial Analyst at Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church. In July 2008, Garry fully retired and the couple moved back to Saskatoon in order to be closer to their family.

 

Over the years they were blessed with four children: Berkeley, Janelle, Jackie and Carla. His grandchildren were special and he loved travelling or going on camping trips with them and keeping up with their sports progress. As a couple, Garry and Valerie enjoyed travelling to Hawaii, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Arizona, Florida, California, the Maritimes and spending time at Clear Lake. His favourite pastime was watching hockey, football and basketball.

 

Garry was predeceased by his mother Margaret in 1982; father Albert in 2016; father-in-law Alvin Bohn in 2003, brother-in-law Larry Bohn in 2016, sister-in-law Arlene Bohn in 2017 and mother-in-law Constance Bohn in 2018. He leaves to remember his life, his loving wife Valerie of 56 years, his son Berkeley (Monika); daughters Janelle (Todd), Jackie (Colin) and Carla (Arlyn); grandchildren Leighton, Aurora and Quinton; Liam and Eli; Kylie and Meryck; sister Shelley James, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

A Memorial Service will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Ebenezer, Saskatchewan on August 4, 2023 at 1:00 p.m preceded by a private interment at 11:30 AM for immediate and extended family at the Ebenezer Cemetery. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan.
