Obituary of Lawrence Thompson
THOMPSON - Lawrence Wilfred Thompson of Yorkton, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully at the age of 93 years on November 30, 2023, at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. Lawrence was born on December 28, 1929, on his grandparents’ farm near Bredenbury, Saskatchewan to Frank and Minnie (nee Norquay) Thompson. He was the eldest of three children.
Lawrence attended Glyndwr School in the Bredenbury district, worked for various farmers in the area, graded gravel roads for the rural municipality, worked maintenance for the CPR and spent a couple of years working in Manitoba.
In 1960, Lawrence married Lois Kirkness in Bredenbury. Together, except for two years in Melville, they made their home in Yorkton, raising their two children Russ and Marv.
Lawrence worked in sales at McKay’s Paint and Wagner’s Flooring before becoming self-employed as a handyman/carpenter and floor covering installer. His final employment was installing blinds and drapery for Glauser’s Drapery.
An avid bowler for many years, Lawrence achieved numerous high scores and won several trophies. He also enjoyed curling, especially funspiels while serving as a long-time member of the Yorkton Elks Lodge.
Lawrence and Lois were active members of St. Andrew’s United Church with Lawrence sitting on the Property Committee.
Summers were spent camping and travelling around the prairies. A trip to Scotland to visit relatives, and a coach tour to The Maritimes with friends were especially memorable.
Woodworking was a favourite pastime, making Christmas and Halloween decorations for family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening and was especially good at keeping houseplants thriving. Lawrence spent many hours playing Scrabble, playing cards, and watching curling on TV during the winter months.
Lawrence was predeceased by his parents Frank and Minnie Thompson, brother Harold Thompson, parents-in-law, Jim and Lillian Kirkness, and brother-in-law Floyd Fenske.
Lawrence will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years Lois, son Russ (Pat), and their daughters Micaela (Darren), Alexandra (Max), great grandchildren Carter and Beckett, son Marv (Josée) and his daughter Savannah (Dan), Josée’s daughter Dominique (Mark), great grandchildren Miah, Brix, sister Arlene Fenske, brother-in-law Greg (Jeanette) Kirkness, and several nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service was held on December 7, 2023 in St. Andrew’s United Church, Yorkton, SK with Rev. Jen Dresser officiating. The tribute was shared by sons, Russ and Marv.
