Obituary of Lionel Beer

BEER - With sadness we announce the passing of our father, brother, grandfather and uncle Lionel Walter Beer, born July 6,1945. Lionel passed away on November 28,2021 at the Ituna Pioneer Lodge. He was predeceased by wife Helen, his parents Walter and Julia Beer, his in-laws John and Rose Derkach, grand parents and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Lionel Walter Beer was born on the family farm 4 miles southwest of Hubbard on July 6,1945 His brief time living there instilled in him a desire to farm and this grew into his life long passion. His parents moved the family into Hubbard when he was only 4. Moving to Hubbard a rural community offered him the convenience of expanding on his love of farming When ever he disappeared from home we knew that he had walked over to the Schultz's farm or Terry Korchinski's where he would get to ride their horses. Upon arrival back at home a gentle tug on one of the ears or a slap on the bottom did nothing to discourage him. In fact on one such escapade he scurried off to Korchinski's to ride horses without a saddle or any equipment. He ended up falling off the horse. He hightailed it back to town to join the family for a fall supper. Arriving home late Mother tried to quickly dress the young man according to the occasion. Between all the yelps and squeals as she touched his arm it was revealed that a quick trip to the hospital in Ituna was in order. It only confirmed what they suspected. The fall from the horse had broken his arm. Did this curtail his farm visits? Not a chance. He completed his education in Hubbard and Ituna and then he headed to SIAST in Moose Jaw where he trained to become an Autobody Technician. Upon completing the program he used his skills by working for Greenfield Motors in Balcarres. All the while he had been courting the woman of his dreams Helen Derkach (a good farm girl). How ideal. On July 13, 1968 they were married at St. Stanislaus Church in Ituna. Helen with her teaching certificate and Lionel with his auto body certificate each worked in their chosen field while living in Balcarres. However, the farming bug returned. In 1973 Lionel took over the Beer Family Farm plus they purchased a home quarter one mile southwest of Hubbard that became their home. On February 25,1977 they had a son Ryan who became the apple of their eyes. Lionel expanded the farm and Helen continued teaching in Hubbard and Ituna. Ryan grew up a smalltown country boy whose parents adored him. To their delight he married Melanie Wessing (also a farm gal) and life could not have been better. They soon became grandparents and learned the art of grandcuddling. This set up a new way of life. Ryan's family grew to include three children Kaydince, Reese and Ryder. There couldn't have been a set of happier grandparents. While Lionel was generally tied to the land and cattle he nourished, Helen would represent them both on many visits to Ryan and family both in Lloydminster and Fort Saskatchewan. Lionel would just say "Go visit Mom, I'm vacationing on the North 40. There are a few fences to mend". In conversations with Lionel, he never ceased to remind us of Ryan's super work ethic and how he was training his family to have the same drive and intensity. He was proud of how his son and family were doing. The sudden loss of Helen and the stroke that followed made for a very difficult time for Lionel, he yearned to get back to his home, his animals, and the place where he could still feel Helen's presence in every nook and cranny. He passed away peacefully on November 28, 2021. He was 76 years of age. Rest in Peace Lionel. We will miss you. He is survived by his son Ryan and wife Melanie, grand children Kaydince, Reese and Ryder, his sisters Frances Quichuk and Gladys(Terry) Wawruck, nephew Corey Wawruck his wife Dawn (Williamson) Wawruck and many other nephews, nieces, cousins and other family members too numerous to mention. He leaves his in-laws and special friends Richard and Anna Wessing whose help and support for him was endless, also Mathew and Courtney Hilliar good neighbours who have done so much. The family wishes to thank the many staff members of the Ituna Pioneer Lodge for the exceptional but brief care of dad. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, December 4th 2021 from St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Ituna with Rev. Fr. Albert Schmitz officiating. Organist, Paulette Van der Helm led members of the parish choir and the congregation in the hymns 'How Great Thou Art', 'Gift of Finest Wheat', and 'Day is Done'. The interment took place in the Ituna RC Cemetery with grandchildren Kaydince, Reese and Ryder serving as the casketbearers. Memorials were to the Saskatchewan 4-H Association.
