The following is a copy of my Facebook post from Sept 17/24 —
My heart breaks at the passing of my first cousin, Ken. Our farms were very close by and we were only 4 months apart in age and spent a lot of time together over our growing up years… from Sunday meals at each others homes, to larger family gatherings (always playing games after a meal), attending church/youth, to attending the same schools and riding the school bus together. I will remember running around Springside and playing “Anti-I-Over” at Grpa & Grma Gabert’s house, playing Clue and foosball at Ken’s house, the always crazy fun of Christmas gift exchange games, and that Ken was always such a whiz at math and therefore we made him keep score during board games. Ken loved sports including watching them on TV and always had incredible knowledge of all the stats. I know I will miss mentioning something and memories will keep coming to my mind as the days go by. — It had been way too long since I had seen you, Ken. I loved and missed you, and even though you are no longer suffering, you are gone way too soon. You will be missed by SO many. My heart and sympathies go out to Louise, Aunt Gerri, Brad & Amanda & their family, Rhonda & Bruce & their family and all other family and friends who are grieving this loss.
Until we meet again, Ken… I love you.

It is a beautiful sunny, fall day, our favorite time of the year. I struggle every day that you are gone, but I can hear you telling me, one day at a time, I know you can do this, it will get better. Kenny, I just need you to squeeze my hand one more time, then maybe I will feel better.

Ken,
I haven't seen you or spoken to you in probably 30 years. We weren't close, although I often wished we were.
You were one of my favourites - I suspect you were quietly a favourite of many.
Few people have your combination of humor & intelligence. I shared some great laughs with you & regret not seeing you more often. I wish we could have somehow stayed in touch.
I'll never forget those days of us playing Sega with Kitz in Saskatoon. Remember how frustrated he'd get when some of our Leafs were somehow indestructible in those games? Even the grinders. Just a crazy advantage we had, although we always pretended we were just better than him. :-). Then again, he could always score on cheap wrist shots from the blue line. ;-)
Anyway... better wrap this up.
I was shocked and saddened when I heard you were gone, Ken.
It's still very hard to believe. I guess I always thought people like you were also indestructible, like those Sega Leafs.
I wondered about you many times over the years and now I wish I had reached out.
Even just to say hi.
So I'll reach out now to say goodbye.
RIP, my friend.

I'm going to miss all the times we played fooseball in Grandmas basement. You never failed to put a smile on all of our faces and we will miss you dearly Ken.

We all enjoyed our time with Uncle Kenny and will miss him very much. I'll miss our games of snakes and ladders even though you cheered and bragged everytime you beat me. Emerson

I am without words. My heart goes out to you, Louise, and to all of Ken’s family and friends. Some of the greatest memories of my life are with Goltzy in the high school and U of S days. His memory will never die. A true gem of a human being I feel lucky to have crossed paths with.
