Janice Mary (Weinmeister) Sherwin was born on July 27, 1950. She was the youngest of three children born to Reinhold and Mary (Hilderman) Weinmeister and grew up on the family farm east of Yorkton.
While attending school in Yorkton, she met Keith Sherwin and on June 29, 1968, they were married. In June of 2023, they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary shortly before Keith’s passing in July. In October of 1972, Jeff was born and Ryan followed in July of 1980.
In 1970, they moved out to the Sherwin family farm after the passing of Keith’s father. It is here Janice lived until the summer of 2023, when the farm was sold. Farm life was well suited for Janice. She always had a large garden where she grew a variety of vegetables. Not only did the family have fresh food throughout the summer, but Janice would spend countless hours canning or preparing them to be frozen to be enjoyed all throughout the winter. There was always enough to enjoy until the next growing season. In addition to gardening, Janice’s flowers kept her busy weeding and pruning. The yard was always alive with many different colours and smells and whenever family or neighbours visited the first thing was to take a tour and see all the pretty colours throughout the yard.
In addition to tending to the garden and yard, Janice always worked off the farm. Saskatchewan Motor Club (CAA), Leon’s, Walmart, Young’s Plant World, and Bailey’s Funeral Home is where she spent her career. Once the kennel opened in 2013, Janice was right there beside Keith helping to care for the many furry guests that came to the farm. Janice continued to operate the kennel even after Keith went into long-term care. When the decision was made to sell the farm in 2023, it was important to Janice that the new owners kept the kennel operational.
Mom was an amazing cook ands any time there was family gathering at the farm, she would spend hours preparing enough delicious food for a small army and Keith would have leftovers for the next week after these meals. And of course, there was always a variety of tasty desserts to occupy the meal, many of which could always be found in the freezer in order to keep Keith’s sweet tooth satisfied.
Family and friends were always a priority for Mom and she always had time for coffee and a chat for anyone who needed it, near or far. In 2023, when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, it was her turn to lean on her family and friends. Unfortunately, the treatments could not control the cancer and it took her from us on November 4, but not without a brave fight.
Janice was predeceased by her husband Keith, parents Reinhold and Mary Weinmeister, in-laws Lloyd and Margaret Sherwin, brother Hansel Weinmeister, brothers-in-law Ken Jamont and Peter Yanish, great-nephews Tim Hay and Stephen Jamont, and nephew-in-law Calvin Allary.
