Pauline Spilchen

Obituary of Pauline Spilchen

Pauline Spilchen, beloved wife of the late Mike Spilchen, passed away peacefully at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on Sunday November 17, 2024 at the age of 90.

Pauline was born at the Yorkton Hospital on August 8, 1934 to Metro and Polly (Chupa) Beblow. She grew up on the family farm in the Orkney district and attended school in both Springside and Orcadia.

It was when living in Orcadia that she met Mike who was looking after his dad’s farm, and they started dating. She knew that he was the love of her life and later they got married on October 14, 1951. A reception was held on both family farms. (Both her and her sister Anne celebrated a double wedding on her side of the family reception.) Pauline and Mike had always farmed in the Orkney district where they raised their 3 girls. In the year 2000 they sold the farm and moved to Yorkton, buying her parents house on Newfield which was for sale at the time. Pauline was able to live in her own home right up till the end.

She was a stay at home Mom, always there for her girls. She never had time for crafts. Her babies were all a year apart and she worked hard dragging those young babies with her, while having to fetch and milk cows twice a day. Those little angels later helped her milk cows, when they grew up. She was a good cook, enjoyed gardening and took pride in her yard. She mowed the grass, trimmed trees and even changed oil in the mowers herself. Her only paying job which was done from her yard, was when the government chose random years to count vehicles for a week, monitoring traffic on the #16 highway for future road projects.

She didn’t have a drivers license but that didn’t stop her from driving the grain truck, helping out at harvest time. One time she got a little too close to the mailbox when passing by with a load. Mike later teased her about how she ended up getting the new mailbox she always wanted.

Pauline and Mike loved weekend get togethers and playing cards with family. They enjoyed coming up to the lake for supper when family were camping, and would sometimes even bring their own camper and stay for a weekend. They loved to travel throughout Saskatchewan and up to BC visiting family. She enjoyed playing horseshoe and her highlight for horseshoe was winning a trophy in Gillette, Wyoming and then when both her and Mike won the Canadian World Championships in BC. That evening was topped off by a supper with a decorated cake (which said: Granny and Gramps the Horseshoe Champs) at the home of their grandson Michael. She also loved bowling and was a regular season bowler for many years and was good at getting strikes. Her last year of season bowling was in 2023. It was after Dad passed away that she joined the UCWL and was a member for several years. Mom started doing word search puzzles to fill time in her day when home. She really enjoyed doing them and knew that every year her Xmas presents would be new word search books. She said best present ever at my age.

Because of Pauline’s three daughters, she was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She loved spending time with her family, playing cards, board games and of course family bowling for fun. The grandkids always enjoyed her breakfast pancakes or potato pancakes for lunch. But what we all miss the most are her Cinnamon Buns, Easter Bread, Christmas Poppyseed Perogies and her Rice Salad dessert for every occasion.

It’s been said that you can always tell where a beautiful soul has been, by the tears and the smiles left behind. And she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Pauline was predeceased by her husband Mike (2009), her parents Metro (1999) and Polly (2005) Beblow and a great-grandson Baby DJ Ismond (2007).

She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory, her daughter Doreen LeVecque, her son Michael (Jennifer) LeVecque and their sons Joel and Mathew all of Victoria, BC; her daughter Adeline (Barry) Herman of Rhein, their daughters Susan (Roger) Geres of Langenburg, Michelle (Kelly) Hubic and their children Bailey (Broden) and Colton of Yorkton and their son Calvin Herman of Yorkton and his children Haydn of Calgary, Emery of Saskatoon and Kingsley of Yorkton; and her daughter Arlene (Gerald) Muzyka of Yorkton and their daughters Angela (Tyler) Fetch of Ituna, Mandy (Kerry) Sawchuk of Red Deer and their children Kaylee (Matt) Kohle of Penhold, Teagan and Ryder of Red Deer, and Renee (Danny) Ismond and their sons Dylan and Carter of Yorkton. Her sisters Anne Shumay and Carol Strocen and brother James (Iris) Beblow all of Saskatoon, and brothers Paul (Sylvia) Beblow and Jerry (Shirley) Beblow of Regina. And numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as many other relatives and friends.
