Obituary of Mervin John Pelletier
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mervin John Pelletier announce his passing on October 24, 2021 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 77 years of age. Mervin Pelletier was born near Saltcoats, Saskatchewan on July 26, 1944 to Joseph and Isabelle (nee Flamont) Pelletier. Mervin attended schooling in Crescent Lake, completing his Grade 8 there. He would then go on to complete his Grade 12 through GED. He worked in various places, taking on a variety of employment roles throughout his life. Mervin had met Joyce Peepeetch in Crescent Lake. They had one son together. Several years later he moved to Alberta where he met Linda Anderson and they were blessed with three children. Mervin, like a true Métis, was nomadic by nature. He was an outdoorsman, and loved camping, especially when surrounded by family. One of his favourite activities was telling stories around a campfire. Mervin had many hobbies; fishing, playing cards, croquet, bocci ball, horseshoes, gardening and bingo just to name a few. He was a trapper and hunter for most of his adult life. He never killed anything he didn't use. Mervin was also an avid guitar and fiddle player and he loved to sing. During his travels he met the love of his life Florence Houle. They remained by each other's side until his passing. Mervin was a fluent speaker of Michif and very proud of his Métis roots. He was a wealth of knowledge. Many of his stories and perspectives as a road allowance person has been kept for all to see in the documentary "The Story of the Crescent Lake Métis". Mervin was a proud family man, having raised several of his Grandchildren. He loved and cherished each and every family member, whether you were family by blood or marriage he called you ‘my girl' or ‘my boy'. He had a special way to make everybody feel wanted, welcomed, and accepted.
Mervin was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Isabelle Pelletier; his daughter Nicole Anderson; brothers Gilbert Pelletier, James Pelletier, Roy Pelletier, Richard Pelletier, Henry Pelletier and Victor Pelletier; sisters Mary Brazeau, Evelyn Pelletier, Velma Shingoose and Kathleen Pelletier; brothers-in-law Lester Shingoose, Francis "Chi-Boy" Pelletier, and Marcel Roussin; sisters-in-law Mabel Peepeetch, Gloria Wasacase and Mavis Kakakaway; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and many other family members and friends.
