She grew up on the family farm and was the last surviving member of a family of 12 which included 8 brothers and 3 sisters. Mary was introduced to the love of her life, Peter Witow, from a photograph of a handsome young man in the army which was given to her by a relative. They were married on October 20, 1947 and made their home in Whitebeech, Sk where they farmed and raised 4 children. As a farmer's wife, Mary worked very hard. It was not unusual for her to toil in the fields alongside her husband. She also had a big garden, most of which was weeded by hand. A garden big enough that not only fed her family but also friends and relatives. She was an excellent cook and it was probably not a coincidence that company would happen to appear around meal time. Her homemade bread was something that everyone couldn't get enough of and just couldn't duplicate. Although leading a relatively simple life, she loved mentally challenging games such as difficult card games, all types of word puzzles and her favorite "scrabble". Not many people could beat her in that game. In 1980, Peter and Mary retired to an acreage near Swan River, MB and continued to have a large garden and maintained a beautiful yard. Mary continued to do a lot of canning, making perogies, borscht and other delicious care packages to send home with her children. In the winter she kept busy with beautiful needlepoint and cross stitching work that will be forever cherished by present and future generations in the family. Peter passed away in November of 2002. Mary then moved to Fairview Arms in Yorkton where she resided for 13 years. After her health started failing, she moved to Weber House at the Yorkton District Nursing home where she made many friends. Mary had a great sense of humor and enjoyed joking around with the staff who took excellent care of her. Service Details.
