Eulogy for Denise Good Afternoon. My name is Marty Neumeier and I am Deniseu2019s younger brother. On behalf of the Lucas and Neumeier families, I would like to thank you all for joining us to celebrate the life of my amazing sister and for all the ways you supported her & Jeff the past few years. We are not here today to dwell on the difficult path they've travelled since her cancer diagnosis, but it is important to acknowledge it. Your love and friendship made even the hardest days a little easier. There were many wonderful aspects to Deniseu2019s life and many ways in which she touched our lives. She will be remembered as a wonderful friend, sister, aunty and, most importantly, wife and mother. She made our lives richer and fuller in so many different ways. Now that she has left us, there is emptiness and pain, but the gift of her life will stay with us. She lives on in our memories and stories. My brother, Dean, and I got to visit with Denise for a good long while during her final days. We shared stories and tears and, as always with Neenee, there was lots of laughing. We canu2019t celebrate her life without talking about her liveliness and wit and the way laughter always seemed to follow her around. Her comedic timing was perfect. When Dad died so shortly after Mom and we found ourselves back at the funeral home planning a second funeral in just 3 months, Neenee broke the tension by asking the funeral director if there was any chance of a u201cBuy One Get Oneu201d deal. Well, Iu2019m not sure that he had ever heard such a roar of laughter from a grieving family. He looked absolutely mortified, but eased up pretty quickly once he got a sense of how Neenu2019s humour was part of the glue that held us together as a family. We reminisced about our childhood in Esterhazy and the fun and challenges of growing up in a family of 5 kids in a house with only 1 bathroom. We talked about all the good times we had visiting Granny & Grandpa on the farm and about how much we missed them and Mom & Dad, too. Dean and I joked about how much we enjoyed escaping Esterhazy in the summers to come stay at Denise & Jeffu2019s little house on Agricultural Avenue. There were always ice cream sandwiches waiting in the freezer for us and we always went home with a sharp new haircut. I reminded her of an act of kindness from our childhood that has stuck with me over the years. When I was about 8 or 9, my singular focus in life was GI JOE toys and comic books. One winter day, and for no apparent reason, Denise walked downtown to Pozniaku2019s Pharmacy and spent $15 of her hard earned babysitting money to buy me 2 GI JOE action figures. I can still remember their names. Denise was always putting everyone ahead of herself and this was just another small example of how she brightened our lives with her kindness and thoughtfulness. We talked openly about the last 3 years and her rollercoaster journey through its ups and downs. I shared with her how proud I was of her and about some of the things I admired the most. How she collected so many good friends through the years. The resilience and grace she showed us as she struggled to regain her health. And how much she reminded me of our dear Mom. During our visit, I asked her to reflect back on her life. We talked about her boys. She was so proud of Jacob and the young man he is growing up to be, and so thankful for 25 wonderful years of marriage. I joked that Jeff picked well. She quickly corrected me, saying SHE was the one who picked well. She was so appreciative for her mother-in-law, Jean, for how close they were and for what a blessing she has been these past few years. She told us about her many close friendships and how important they were to her, especially her best friend, Gloria. She told us that she loved her work and said that she never had a bad job in her 27 year career at Sunrise Health. She talked with pride of her garden and her home and how much she loved living in Yorkton. She said that she had SUCH a good life. When it was time to say goodbye, I held her hand and I kissed her on the forehead. I told her how much I loved her, how much Iu2019m going to miss her and how I will be there for her boys. It was one of the hardest days of my life, but I am so thankful for every minute of it. Rest Easy, My Sweet Sister.
