Obituary of Sophie Peesker

PEESKER - Sophie passed away on March 5, 2021 at the home of her daughter surrounded by family, after a short battle with cancer in Melville, Saskatchewan. She was 85 years of age. Sophie was born to Mike and Anne Antonishyn on their family farm in the RM of Bon Accord, Saskatchewan on May 3, 1935. She was the youngest daughter of 11 children. At the age 16 Sophie began working in housekeeping at the Melville hospital and later as a waitress at the Ituna cafe where she met her future husband. Sophie married George Peesker on July 17, 1954. They moved to the Peesker family farm where they farmed and raised their five children. Sophie enjoyed caring for her herd of milking cows, and raising geese, turkeys, and chickens. She was a true animal lover that had a special way with dogs. If there was a dog around, it was at Sophie's feet or following close behind as she did chores. To feed her family she began gardening shortly after moving to the farm. This developed into a passion for growing food and nurturing flowers that followed her when Sophie and George moved to Foam Lake in 1996. Sophie showed her devotion to the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church by sharing her plants and flower arrangements. She was an active member of the parish, donating her time to the Ukrainian Catholic Ladies Aid, and lending her beautiful voice to the Church and Veselka choirs. When she wasn't giving back to her community, Sophie enjoyed spending time with her large extended family, often preparing delicious Ukrainian meals and sending everybody home with reading materials and lovingly made baking, preserves, and leftovers. Every member of her family was honored to receive one of her thoughtfully made cross stitch, crochet, sewing, or quilting projects. All appreciating the hours of love and devotion it took to make. Sophie was predeceased by her husband George. Parents Mike and Anne Antonishyn. Brothers Steve (Anne) Antonyshyn, John (Helen) Antonyshyn, Walter (Katie) Antonyshyn, and Peter Antonyshyn.
