Obituary of Marion Yvonne MacLean

The family of Marion McLean of Canora Gateway Lodge, wife of the late Wilson MacLean, sadly announce her passing on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at the age of 98 years. There will be no service at this time. Marion Yvonne MacLean (nee Wotherspoon) was born m Melville on January 9, 1922 to Peter and Mary (McCallum) Wotherspoon Marion received her education at Success and Happy Centre rural schools, then high school and a Business Course in Melville, graduating in 1941. She worked at H. Mackay Law Office and Coop Creamery. Marion joined the army (CWAC) where in spite of hopes to be sent overseas. She was posted to the Army Supply Section in Regina. On disbandment of the CWAC in 1946, Marion hired on as a Civil Servant with the Department of National Defence in Regina and Moose Jaw. In 1967 she was awarded the Centennial Medal in the Public Service category. Marion was united in marriage to Wilson MacLean (a 28 year Army veteran) in 1969. She was brought up in the uninspiring days of the depression and had "no great expectations", but Wilson, who had spent his first working years in the coalmines of Cape Breton, saw beauty everywhere and through this Marion became interested in local and foreign travel and was privileged to see London, Paris, Rome, Venice, and later parts of India, NePal, and South America. In 1983 the couple retired to the family farm north of Melville with expectations of easy living. Sadly, Wilson died just one year later and Marion remained on the farm planting trees and flowers to add to the natural beauty of the yard. In August of 2000 Marion purchased a house in Melville which at one time belonged to her brother Dave and his family. Marion may have rented an apartment but she had a cat and dog to look after. She never was a dominant or moving force in community organizations but served several minor roles such as setting tables, doing dishes, compiling schedules etc. For a number of years Marion conducted the Natural History Christmas Bird Count in the rural area surrounding the farm. She also compiled a family history book. Reading, especially history novels and animal stories, was a life-long interest. Predeceased by husband Wilson; her father and mother; brothers, Dave and his wife Cathie, Mervyn, Frank, Hugh and his wife Ainslie and by sister Gladys; sisters-in-law, Mildred Wotherspoon and Vicki Wotherspoon.
